Walk about Izu Peninsula

Walk about Izu Peninsula

I had crossed Izu Peninsula last year. And I decided to hike Izu Peninsula well this time. I have not walked the north end of the Izu ridge trail, and the south shoreline seemed to be attractive, too. I modified the earlier plan, because one co-worker wanted to participate by all means.
I decided the starting point at α -1 hotel of Mishima, because the breakfast was buffet style and it costed around 5,000 yen for one night. The co-worker joined at midnight.  I hiked from the ridge trail from the north end to the south while guiding the co-worker, then we will go down to Ito. Then he could go home safely, and I would stay at a cheap hotel and got a resupply, and went to Mt. Amagi again. Therefore, I would hike to the south, moved to Rendaiji by by train, and Matsuzaki by bus. The reason of Z-shaped movement was that I set the national recreation village in Yumigahama as a final destination. The reason was that the buffet was expected to be delicious.

Phase 1
The 1st day

We rode on the train at 8:10, but I forgot to take a ticket out of the automatic ticket gate. I explained my mistake at the staff of Shuzenji station, then I could go out without additional charge. We I went to the Mt. Darmayama Rest House by bus. We started to hike at 10:00. 10:50 Mt.Kinkanyama. W saw Mt. Fuji beautifully. We took lunch at Mt. Darumayama at 12:20. I doubted  whether we could reach Mt.Nekkodake peaks pond, because our pace was a little slow. 14:30 Funabara Pass. I estimated the arrival time at Peaks Pond might be between 6:00 and 7:00 p.m.
16:00 Nanmyo Pass. There is no water. We walked looking for water because the trail from the Doi Pass became far from the forest road. The co-worker discovered something like the water before approaching Mt.Konnoyama. There was surely water when I went  in the valley. We decided to get water and to camp. There was some slanted place. The co-worker said it was a tiring work when I let him work as a slave. But he should do this, because I carried all the foods for dinner. The main dish was fried vegetables with smoked chicken and the dry  scallop. Additional dishes were  freeze dry natto,  packed boiled beans, tuna potato salad, and soup. I had carried the fresh vegetables:  bean sprout, spinach, one cabbage. I think bad taste food is always bad even in the mountains. My co-worker satisfied very much for my dinner.

The 2nd day

We took breakfast independently. We started to hike at 7:00. 7:40 Mt.Konnoyama ( not Mt.Tamashiinoyama ). It might be better to advance farther and pitch tents yesterday, because tent ground was slanted. The weather was bad. We were able to see nothing because of white out. 9:20 Nishina Pass, 10:15 the view place of Mt.Nekkodake, 10:30 Mt.Nekkodake Peaks Pond. The weather became worse. 12:40 Mt.Mifutayama. The temperature was 0 degree of centigrade,

the rain changed to hail. We wore rain suit, could not rest for lunch. I decided to go to Nihonmatsu Pass for lunch. We reached a small rest house of Ninonmatsu Pass at 13:40. 15:10 Amagi Pass. It became a competition with time, because Hattcho Pond located far from here. When we arrived the vicinity of Hattcho Pond, It became dark. We arrived at 18:20. It was just before the head lamps was needed. I pitched tent immediately and made secure water with a water filter. The main dish of our dinner was pot‐au‐feu with sausage, dried scallop and cabbage, because a big cabbage was left. Other menu was Rice, frieze dry Natto, boiled packed beans, tuna potato salad, and soup.

The 3rd day

I slept well. My breakfast was bread, cheese, rehydrate mango, and coffee. My co-worker seemed to be cold.  The outer tent was frozen. We started to hike at 7:00. 9:20  Mt. Kodake. We took a short break. 10:10 Mt.Manzaburodake. We end up at the rest hous of Amagikogen golf course at 13:00. We had to kill around two hours, because the bus service was not available until 15:00.  We entered the restaurant. I ordered Piza and coffee, he ordered pasta. The both were very tiny and expensive. Our impression of this restaurant became worse. Anyway, we drank several cups of coffee. The bus arrived at Ito Station at 5:00, its charge was only 500 yen. I parted from the fellow and checked in at the cheapest hotel "Sea Route" with 3,900 yen per night. The stuff was kind. I received the resupply I had sent. The room was a little old but clean. There is no big problem. There was the corner, where soy sauce and a microwave oven were put for customers.
There were cheap restaurants near here. and also a cheap restaurant which served fishes in the downtown close to the station. But I passed it and went to the supermarket. To tell the truth, I forgot to bring my tights this time.  I bought training pants of nylon with the mesh for 980 yen, because did not want to buy similar tights. I was at a loss for a while, but  decided to buy a large serving of the sashimi, the salad, and a pack of the rice. The supermarket dinner was delicious.
The bath was a hot spring, but did not become warm soon. I waited approximately for ten minutes. I felt discomfort, because the water pipe of the bath smelled of the ditch. I closed the door firmly, after using the bath. I confirmed the four days resupply and packed it into my backpack.

Phase 2
4th day

I rode on the bus bound to Amagikogen  golf course at 7:55. Approximately five passengers. We arrived the terminal at 8:50. 9:15 Yotsutsuji. It was fog, but, fortunately, it did not rain. I did not hike toward Mt.Manjirodake, but toward Mt.Mansaburodake.  The tail was good for a while, but sometimes rocky and rugged. The trail toward Mt. Manjirodake might be better. It became very steep at neighborhood of Karasawa. I felt climbing of the cliff. 11: 00 Krarasawa junction. I could not find a running water at all, though it had rained before. I arrived the junction of Mt.Mansaburodake, and took lunch which I bought at a convenience store. 13:20 Totsuka Pass, 14:46 Hachoo Pond. I pitched a tent, made 4 litters of water at 15:30,  and enjoyed coffee and a cake. I read a paperback about the theory of human evolution. The main dish of dinner was boiled duck sirloin and the cabbage.

The 5th day

I got up at 5:30, ate usual breakfast:  bread, cheese, re-hydrate mango, and coffee. I started to hike at 7:00 carrying 2 litters of water. It was cloudy, then I decided to hike on the ridge trail toward south. The junction of Mt.Mitsusuji and a forest road at 8:00. The road was paved by cement. Afterward, clear trail continued. It joined the forest road at 9:35. Something was under construction, and many tree were cut down. The stuff of the construction site guided me to the trail  for a while. He  said that  21 wind-generated electricity plants along a ridge trail were under construction. Therefore, many trees were cut. 11:20 Mt. Mitsusuji. I took a lunch. The trail toward Oikekogen was entirely, because of the construction of  the wind-power plants. I began to hike down to Inatori area at 12:00. I lose way for a while, but arrived at Izu-Inatori Station on schedule at 14:30. I went to Reidaiji by train, and Rendaiji to Matsuzaki by bus at 16:10. While I was waiting for bus, I shaved mustach, and wiped my body, and got 4 litters of water, because I did not know where I could sleep. At Rendaiji, I could not use  WiFi nor WiMax. I got off a bus at Matsuzaki-cho. I noticed I should ride off more earlier. But, I found FamilyMart and purchased vegetables set and breads. I walked up along the forest road, without knowing a right way to Mt. Ushiharayama. I made a large detour. I could not find water, but decided to stay at the unpaved parking lot.  I pitched my tent before dark. Main dish was boiled vegetables with smoked chicken with Chinese taste. Neither a car nor a person came.

The 6th day

I got up at 5:30. I had some headaches. I ate usual breakfast: bread, cheese, re-hydrated mango, and coffee. I started to hike at 6:40. I wanted to go to the peak of Mt.Ushiharayama, because I came with much effort here. There was a rest house and water near the peak, but  camping was prohibited. I could not go to the peak, where was surrounded by wire netting. The peak may be a private land. I returned from the neighborhood of the peak, and went the forest road until the dead end. There was a restroom and a splendid lawn, but camping was prohibited. I returned to the PA site again, and went down the trail with steep decent. The trail was rugged and difficult to trace. I walked on the the paved road and found Iwashina school, an Important cultural property.
There should be a trail from here, but I could not found it. The position was slightly different from the map of Shobunsha. At first, the trail was paved, but it became rough immediately. There was a small creek for a while. 9:20 Ubikawa Pass. The trail was desolate from here. Nobody walked.
There was several trail  in the map. I advanced a trail for a while,  but it became apart from the right direction,  when I checked it with GPS. I cross the bush, and backed to the right trail. 10:00 OO(large) Pass. The peak of Mt.Kurasawaya was very near, but there was only a steel tower. I advanced a little, rested at Chojahara at 10:40. I saw Mt. Fuji in the distance, but I could not take lunch, because of strong wind. I walked to Ko(small) Pass, then I ate lunch. There was a forest road which was not drew in the map. But I walked down comfortably. I lost the right direction in a few minutes, but I wend down. I came to Tenjinbara Plant Park, and noticed that I had gone for south. Two men of motorcycles asked me about the exact location. I taught that they came to dozens of kilos north by mistake. I joined the national road at 13:00, while looking at the village of Tenjinbara. I climbed the peak of Mt.Takatoriyama at 13:50. It was very scenery,  because its height was 519 meters above sea level. The trail was  maintained well and I descended in an acute angle. I aim at the parking lot of Hagachizakien. The trail  became a considerably rocky course finally. Hagachizakien was a private land. I could not go to sea without paying money. Fortunately, there was an excellent restroom, I got 4 litter of  water, and got ready for stealth camping at 15:20. The trail became be  paved, but neither a person nor the car goes at all. There were many abandoned cultivated lands, when I was be able to see Ihama village.  The topography was near to a cliff, so I could not found elsewhere except the abandoned lands. There was no place when I went near the village. I pitched the tent on the abandoned land at 16:00. It was a splendid place of the scenery. The dinner was rice,  smoked chicken, dehydrated vegetables, natto, a potato salad, and soup.

The 7th day

I wake up at 5:30, took usual breakfast:  bread, cheese, re-hydrated mango, and coffee. I started to hike at 6:45. I wanted to stay National Park Resort Minamiizu at the last day of hiking, I asked to my wife to reserve it. 9:40 Himiyama trail. it was short but clean. At the end of the trail, there was an excellent restroom.   I wash a face and wipe a body at 10:30. I found an excellent restaurant in Koura, I entered. I waited for a while, because the service began from 11:00. I ordered the set meal of the grilled fish and rice. The slice of fish was small, and it costed around 1,600 yen. I felt it was very expensive.  It might be the special price for the tourist of Izu.
I left Koura at 11:20,  and arrived at Mera immediately. There was no store, but only one Chinese restaurant. I thought it was right that I had carried 4 days food from Ito to here. I could not buy any food. I entered the Minamiizu trail. The trail began as a paved forest road, then it became narrow, and it became tough with many ups and downs. At about 14:00, I met a woman, who was eating a rice ball and took a break. I could not speak to her, probably because I was a strange huge person for her. There were several fallen trees when I advanced for a while and the trail was occupied by them. I detoured greatly to the ridge. The woman might be tired to walk against  the fallen trees. There was no place to pitch a tent  on the way, and I reached Yoshida Beach at 15:00. There was an excellent flush lavatory room, and the camping was prohibited from May 1 to
September 30. In other words, the camping is legal now. I pitched the tent at 15:30, because I need not to hurry. There was an indication that the water of the restroom could not drink, because it might be the groundwater. I used water filter and got 4 litters of water. In the evening, several anglers only walked by my tent. The dinner menu was the same as yesterday.

The 8th day

I wake up at 5:00. It rained a little,  but the weather is cloudy. Usual breakfast was bread, cheese, re-hydrated mango, and coffee. I started hike at 6:50, the tough trail with ups and downs continued. I took a break Futonahama at 7:50. The trail was desolate. No one walked. The trail toward Senjojiki was a very steep descent as I felt fear at 9:20. I met an angler, and asked to take my photos.  At 10:15 Iruma. There was no restaurant, no grocery store. When I sat down and drank juice from a vending machine, the woman of neighborhood house nearby gave me a  banana. She wanted to give me a bread, but I have plenty of bread, so I rejected. There seems to be the small store selling bread. I talked with a 93-year-old old man for a while. When I said my age was 63 years old, he said that I was young. Yes,  I was younger than 93 years old man.
I entered the trail and reached Nakagi at 12:20. The end point of this hiking was National Park Resort Minamiizu in Umigahama, therefore, I had to slow down. I ate bread as lunch and got 4 litters ow water form a restroom and climb the trail. There was a rest house near peak, because I know by watching an aerial photograph. In addition, there was a restroom in the Geopark, too. But I did not go to  Geopark, because it was located near the road. I found a rest house at 13:30. I pitched the tent in a rest house, because it was expected that the weather became worse.
It was a gentle rain at 14:00. The dinner menu was same as before. This was the last stealth camp.

The 9th day

I slept well and got up at 5:30. It did not rain very much. A new hole was done a around the rest house. A wild boar seemed to come. I age usual breakfast: bread, cheese, re-hydrated mango, and coffee. I started to hike at 6:40. The trail from Cape Iro-zaki bus stop was closed. I passed and walk away for a while. But it is an unpleasant road walking. I had to make a round trip from the Cape Iro-zaki Port to Cape Iro-zaki. I returned to the bus stop. There was a trace on a hedge, where many people invaded the prohibited area.  I entered at there. The jungle park became the ruins by bankruptcy. 7:50 Cape Iro-zaki Lighthouse. There was an excellent flush rest room at the entrance. I went to the tip of Cape Iro-zaki. It was surely a superb view.
But, I could not stay for a long time there, due to a strong wind. I took a short break in the Shinto shrine of the cliff. I began to walk at 8:00. From the port of Cape Iro-zaki, I had to walk on the paved road. The traffic density was small. I arrived at the National Park Resort Minamiizu in Umigahama at 11:00. Before the check-in, I ate the turban shell rice in large bowl at Aokisazae restaurant. This was a failure, because I ate too much rice. I checked in at the Park Resort at about 12:00, but I could not enter the room until 15:00. Therefore, I left baggage and went out for a short hike toward Tarai cape. The cape was too near, I  doze off at the shore for approximately one hour to kill a time. Then, I entered the room at 15:00. The room was very wide , designed for family usage. I could not use the internet, except only in the place of the counter.
The bath was a hot spring, I felt very comfortable. The dinner buffet was very splendid.
I regretted that I had ate too much rice for lunch. The breakfast buffet was ordinary level.
My spring hiking was finished safely. My body became firm and well-conditioned.

メモ

  • Primus PackLite

Memo

  • Primus PackLite was very fuel efficient stove. I used only one canister.
  • I used Pentax K-30 and DA18-270mm zoom lens. This lens was slow in focusing speed and inferior in image quality. This was a failure. I will use DA18-135mm zoom lens here after.

Hilleberg Akto

I purchased Hilleberg Akto for the 47,000 yen from a parallel importer. I had doubted a little, but the arrival date was precise and it was really a Hilleberg product. The price was almost the same as purchasing it from U.S.A. including the postage The another method to import personally may be to buy it directly at the English site of Hilleberg.

I purchased Akto around 2005 and used it for five years. Afterwards, I used Power Lizard, which was lightweight (1.0 kg ) and relatively strong in wind, but is easy to suffer condensation, because there was no ventilation hole, and an entrance was not a two-way zipper. Therefore, I decided to return to Akto once again.

Akto

I will itemized the features of Akto.
  • Relatively lightweight (1.3 kg, Packed Weight 1.7 kg), and strong for wind.
  • The pitching is quite easy even in the strong wind condition, due to the extero-skeleton design.
  • The special cloth called Kerlon 1200 is 4 times stronger than the normal tent cloth.
  • Akto can be pitched at most places,  because the flexibility of the stake position is high.
  • There are vents at the both end of external tent, and the zipper of the entrance is two-way, then the condensation control is easy.
  • The zippers of outer and the inner tent are two-way. It is convenient for ventilation.
  • The negative point is only one, very expensive price.

I pitched the Akto in the neighboring vacant place. It was quite easy to pitch Akto. I staked at six places, and pulled guy lines, then the pitching was over.

Akto can be pitched firmly by 6 stakes with additional guy lines (white).

The upper is outer cable of bicycles, the lower is sewed-in wire.

The eaves was not improved. the wire was sewed in. Therefore, I cut the seam with a cutter and, insert an outer cable of bicycles, and sewed as before. The both ends of outer cable was covered by vinyl tape.

The additional guy lines to pitch Akto by 4 or 6 stakes. I think it is very efficient.

The golden stakes were included. I do not use them.

The upper is old guy line, the lower is new guy line. New guy line is bigger around 1 mm. It may be easy to use when temperature is low.

The joints were big. Hilleberg is making minor modifications.

The zipper tab are double. Therefore, I can open upper part of the entrance independently.

The wide flap was added. The models before 2005 had no flap.

The plastic hooks of an entrance were changed to the large size.

The minimum weight of new Akto is 1.3 kg, but the total weight including tent, pole, spare pole, and staff sacks is 1.6 kg, excluding stakes. I do not want to sacrifice comfort and toughness, this degree of weight is unavoidable. I think Hilleberg is improving the details little by little. I will use new Akto after entrance parts are seem-sealed by SILNET.

The crossing of Izu Peninsula

The crossing of Izu Peninsula

We intended to hike Izu Peninsula several years ago, but did not readily go. We went out decisively this time, but we had to stay at hotel at the first day, because we were living remote place from Izu. However, the fees of hotel were too expensive for me. It costed around 15,000 yen and very bad to my heart. Therefore, I chose Ito city for the starting place, because there was an economical hotel with around 6,000 yen per night per person, and breakfast buffet. The facilities of hotel were old, but they were well maintained, the hot spring was comfortable, and the breakfast buffet was an ordinary level, too. You can realized when you watched the photos. I thought that we moved from Ito to Izuokawa by Isukyu train and began to hike. In addition, we bought sushi and salad at the supper market close to the station for the dinner. They were cheap but very delicious. Especially, the fish was very fresh.

The first day

We hesitated to depart, because the rain was pouring. But we went to Ito Station. There are bus service to  Amagi Heights Golf Course. I was worried about my wife, but if we boarded on the bus, we had nothing to do, but pitch a tent and sleep. We decided to go decisively to Izuokawa by the train. However, my wife could not believe the fee of 880 yen. She felt too expensive and talked to a station employee whether it was wrong or not. Izu is difficult place to approach, because we are living in a economical place in Toyama.

We started to hike from Izuokawa Station. it was still pouring. We wear the rain suits. I navigated with GPS and a map carefully, because the town was the most difficult place to navigate. We were at the first big switchback in the forest road at 11:05. It stopped raining. There was a water spot when we went for a while. The location was just near entrance. We went  for approximately one hour. There was the place that water slightly flowed in the gutter. We ate bread and cheese for lunch. I got 4 litters of water with a water filter. I carried 3 litters and my wife 1 litter. There were several sites on the roadside for tent, but we advanced further, while confirming the water in the gutter. The planed tent site was Mt. Hokiyama. But there may be no water, then, we must climb Mt.Manjiro, and pitch our tent, and I must make a round trip for around 1.5 hours to get water. There was a good site for camping near the wind-generated electricity plants, where there was water in the gutter. But, we advanced further. The entrance of Mt. Hokiyama forest road was closed, but we entered at the side. There was a puddle at the turning point.  I thought that I should come here again to get water, when there was no water on the summit of Mt. Hokiyama.

I pitched our tent at the summit of Mt.Hokiyama. Fortunately, there was a tiny puddle.  I got 7 liters of water with a water purifier. The dinner menu is fried rice with sausage,  dry vegetables, potato and pumpkin salad with tuna and mayonnaise, a packed bean, a packed pickle, and seasonings for rice, because I left rice without frying. I ate also sweet bread, the leftover mandarin oranges.

The second day

We woke up at 5:45. breakfast menu was JMT bread, cheese, mango, and coffee. We started to hike at 7:30. The trail became to be footprints in a few minutes,  and marked by red tapes. We met nobody. Nobody seems to walk here. The trail condition worsened rapidly. The trail became very steep at the foot of Mt. Mnjiro. There were not much switchbacks.  It was not so steep as our Katakai river trail. We were at the summit of Mt. Manjiro at 10:05. The trail became suddenly obvious, and we met many hikers. We ate bread and cheese, drunk cocoa at the summit of Mt.Mansaburo, because a family who made noodles with a jet boil.  Competitively, I boiled by the Primus PackLite. Full of people were in the narrow summit.  The hoarfrost came off lightly, too.  We departed at 12:30. There were the trees, which were pure white by hoarfrost, and the ground was white as it snowed. This neighborhood mountains were a great quantity of rain zone. We were surrounded by fog all the time. We could not see the scenery. When we went down a little from the top of Mt. Koyama, the fog cleared. We reached Totsuka Pass at 14:00, my wife tired. We walked slowly, and reached Hacho Pond at 15:50.  I pitched our tent hurriedly, because of strong cold wind. I got 7 liters water with water filter. The dinner menu were almost same except using smoked chicken.

The third day

We got up at 6:15. The breakfast menu was JMT bread, cheese, mango, and coffee. The surface of the pond froze. It was around -5 degrees centigrade in a vestibule. We departed at 8:10. The restroom near the pond was closed. The winter season rest room was open. The trail was well maintained, but there were several places that collapsed untouched. And we must took a  roundabout way. We reached Amagi Pass at 10:45. The temperature did not rise, and very cold. We took a short rest. We ate lunch at Nihonmatsu Pass at 12:30. The temperature is around -4 degrees. We felt very cold because of the cold wind. It was a wind chill effect. We departed at 13:00. We reached Fukazawa Pass at 13:40, Mt. Mikasayama at 14:35. There was no water in a ridge afterwards. We reached Mt Nekkodake at 16:30, but there was no water. I know there should be a crater lake in this neighborhood. It became dark and got impatient because the wife got tired. At last, I found pond when we went down from Mt.Nekkodake at 16:50. I set up a tent hastily. The water purifier frozen up. I got 2 litters of surface water and used it for the cooking. The dinner menu were almost same except using smoked chicken. It snowed. I prayed for not being piled up. After dinner, I soaked the filter in warm water and defrosted it. I make 7 litters of water in a tent. Because small mud is mixed, I had to clean the filter frequently.  It took approximately one hour to got clean water. To avoid freezing, we put it between our sleeping bags.

The fourth day

During night, it was not cold very much. The lake froze, but there was no snow. We got up at 6:00,  took usual breakfast. We departed at 7:30. It was very cold by a strong wind.  There was an observatory on the way, and I took photos of Mt. Fuji from here, which was really splendid.  I saw a ranch when we descended. The ridge trail seemed to be very cold by the strong wind when we walked to north. I decided hike down to Ugusu not to Tohi.  We reached Nishina Pass at 8:45. It was a strong wind, and freezing temperature. We walked on the road and headed to Ugusu. The car hardly went. Because there are  more than 1,000 meters of altitude differences and 10km distance, it is expected the arrival time of Ugusu was noon. In other words, We were not in time for a limited express bus for Numazu. We reached Ugusu bus stop as expected at 12:00. We ate lunch in a bus: several breads, hamburgers, and 1 litter of milk, bought at Thanks ( convenience store ) We went to  Shuzenji by bus and went to Mishima by train, and decided to buy dinner pack at the Nagoya terminal of Shinkansen, because there were not good stores in front of Mishima Station. We return home at 21:00.

The hiking of Izu Peninsula
  • It is unexpectedly cold by the wind chill effect in winter. This area is also a great quantity of rain zone.
  • There is almost no water on the Izu ridge trail. The water spot are Hacho pond and Mt.Nekkodake Peak's pond. A water purifier is necessary for the latter, because it is muddy.
  • When you come to the shoreline, the bus runs one for 30 minutes, bound to Mishima and Shuzenji.
  • The hotel charges are relatively expensive, but there are cheap hotels. You should find out  in Web beforehand.
  • The trail looks good at a first glance, but it is maintained minimum. Landmarks are maintained well.

My New Communication System: Why did I abolish smartphones?

WILLCOM's cheap cell phone for voice call ,  Gallaxy SII (Android device without phone service) ,  DeLorme inReach for two way communication system, and Microsoft Wedge Mobile Keyboard in the outdoor.

My new system

WILLCOM's cheap cell phones are for voice call only. It cost 1080 yen per month. I borrowed 3 phones. It never exceed 1080 yen, because I never call other company's phone.

AtermWM3600RH is a WiMax rooter, and be used for Web. It is used as a wireless LAN system in my house. And it can be used as a core of mobile system when it is taken from the house. It cost 3080 yen per month.

Gallaxy SII is a smartphone of au, but I canceled a contract with au. It can be used in WiFi environment, so it will be paired with the rooter.  In place of Gallaxy SII, Nexus 7 can be used with it. I added a mobile keyboard, because the touch panel is inefficient as an input device.

When the DeLorme inReach is used with the android device, the Iridium two-way email system is constructed. This system is available in USA and also in Japan. I purchase the safety plan, which cost 10 dollars per month. It cost 2 or 3 times in several months, but this plan may be the most economical one.

Microsoft Wedge Mobile Keyboard

Mt. Hakuba to Keyakidaira St.---Test of new equipment

Mt. Hakuba to Keyakidaira St.

If I go to Mt. Hakuba,  I should go before early October, because Mt. Hakuba is a dangerous aria when cold front comes, it means the snowstorm.  I was not completely recovered from the fatigue of JMT.  I watched weather forecast for several days, I thought the next weekend may be the best, because the second day of the hiking might be fine. The approach is simpler, more economical, and more few people than Mt. Tateyama. Firstly, I went to Hiraiwa by JR (Japan Railroad), and rode on a bus bound to Renge Onsen ( spa ) I wanted to test three new equipment this time. Altra 75, RIBZ front pack, Asolo TPS520.  I cannot introduce the new products to my new book without field test.

first day

I ate bread and a banana at Hiraiwa Station for lunch, because I had to wait around 1 hour for the bus. Nobody is. I might be an only passenger for the bus. I changed the the mounting location of the shoulder belts narrow, because I was nervous about new backpack. At this time, the backside of the RIBZ was slightly low, because I used the waist belt stabilizers to hang it, and I had made the inner case of camera with tent mat very crudely, because of lack of time. The driver and conductor of the bus came, and I rode on the bus. But they went somewhere leaving the door open. Approximately six passengers rode on the bus, because they transferred from JR train, came from Hakuba aria around 12:00. The driver and the conductor came back.

I started to hike at 13:30. Nobody followed me. I thought all the passengers would stay at Renge Onsen. The clouds began to emerge, because it was the afternoon. Approximately one hour later, there a coughing. guy followed me. I met him at Tengu no Niwa( the garden of the long-nosed goblin) at 15:00.  He came by car from Shiga prefecture. He carried heavy load with Osprey Variant 52. He wanted to yo-yo to Mt. Hakuba and to hike toward Mt.Asahi, and to return to Renge Onsen. The distance between Mt. Asahi and Hakuba Oike is large if added the distance of the summit of Mt.Hakuba. I recommended  him to stay at the Yukikura shelter hut. He was not strong, because he had a custom of smoking. He was apt to be late. We had rain at last near Hakuba Oike. I pitched the tent at 17:00. It became terrible weather, because the rain and wind were very strong. I became anxious about tomorrow. The tent site was crowded. It  was successive holidays in Japan.

second day

Wind and rain stopped at midnight. I saw starlit sky. I woke up around 3:30 a.m. I had breakfast and at 4:00 and spend slow because it was dark. I started to hike at 5:30, because the sky became bright. I took a short break at Mt. Shorenge at 7:20. It was a fine weather, but clouds emerged in the far place. At 9:00, the peak of Mt. Hakuba.  Nagano aria was covered with clouds, but the Toyama side was clear. I took several photos. There were many people on the peak, but it became few at the foot of Mt. Asahidake. There were dangerous places, where unexperienced hiker would be surprised. I wanted to have  a lunch at the small pond, but I could not find out. so I ate a lunch at the ridge at 10:40. I obtained 1 litter water at the small pond of Mt.Shouzudake at 12:30.  The clouds emerged, and I was afraid of the afternoon shower. I reminded at the more large ponds, where I  could pitch my tent at the beginning of  descent of the Mt. Shimizu. When I hiked down for around 1-2 hours,  I met a guy who was climbing with a large backpack, came from Babadani. I said that he should sleep in an upper ponds, but he said he would do his best. I thought he would go to the peak of Mt. Hakuba. It could rain at any time, because the cloud became thick. I also met another guy who also hiked up from Babadani. He said he wanted to stay at the shelter hut but it was too early to stay so he hiked up. I recommended to pitch a tent near a pond. I arrived at the shelter hut of Mt.Kaerazudake.  It rained intensively. I went to get the water, after I hanged my tent to dry and arranged my baggage. The water flowed very little, so I took 6 litters without a water purifier. The guy met last time was in the hut, but he started to hike once again, because the rain stopped. I thanked to him secretly,  because I could sleep alone. It begun to rain again after 30 minutes.  At first,  I arranged my bedside, and then I  boiled the water and drank hot cocoa and ate an energy bar. Then I purified the water. Dinner was the soup rice,  using the instant whole fried rice. But, as for the rice, cooking the normal rice was the best. After main dish, I ate salad ,  muesli  and milk. After all, I was alone in the hut, and was able to sleep well.

third day

I started to hike at 5:30. There were may dangerous places, footing of the edge of a precipice. The end of decent of Mt.Hiyakan at 8:30. I met the old couple was hiked up. They seemed to be  experts. Next I met young guy soaked with sweat  in several minutes. I said to him "Tough climb, It is a hard place." He said "Is it hard?". I said "Yes" but nothing added because he seemed to be unexperienced hiker, but never die.  It was clear how hard this trail was, because the altitude difference of Babadani and the peak of Mt.Hakuba was 2,200 meters,  and the trail was rugged. I ended up my hike at the forest road at 10:30. It was the place where a mobile phone was able to use. But the GPS did not converge well. I sent my location and message near Babadani Spa with the inReach and the smart phone. I reached Keyakidaira Station at 12:00, met the crowd of people. I washed a face and shaved a mustache and get in a truck train (very narrow gauged train). The fee was very expensive. It costed 2,100 yen from here to Unazuki. I was very tired because I was confined at the narrow seat for 1 hour.
.

  • Altra 75 ...
  • RIBZ Frontpack ( 2012 Version ) ..
  • Asolo TPS 520 ...

John Muir Trail ---South Lake to Lone Pine

From South Lk. to Lone Pine

I was able to stay at Bishop for two night, because I shortened the schedule one day. My wife received the resupplies,  so we checked the food and classified into must-bring foods and must-throw-away food. It was very hot and dry, never became below the freezing temperature. We kept clothes minimum, and decided to send unnecessary equipments, long gaiters, a frying pan, GPS, et. al. to Japan from the post office.

8/13

We left the inn at 8:30,  and walked toward the post office. The backpack was very heavy. It might weighted around 38 kg. A car approached, and "Hiro!"in a loud voice.  It was Jim and his wife Vickie of VVR. I was very astonished. "The small world" Jim said. Yes, it was a very tiny world. I was asked whether I need a ride. "Of course, we need a ride." Jim and Vickie lived in the Bishop, working at VVR, but came back by chance for a few holidays.  Vickie was teaching social media at the college in Bishop He said he came back at past 9:00.

Now, I had to struggle to send a priority mail, because it was a first time for me. I heard the explanation at a window and wrote it a little, and line up in the row again,  and corrected the errors, and lined up again. The infinite loop began.

Jim came and waited all the time, but he became impatient at last and helped me. The loop was ended. I wrote the explanation of content very poorly.  At last, I shipped a priority mail.

Now, our private free taxi started to run. The taxi driver did also a guided tour. I am always lucky in hitchhiking. Next summer, I do not come Bishop, but I would like to hike and live in Bishop, when  I get older. Jim loves Bishops. We love too.

10:00 South Lake. We were not able to climb much, because South Lake is located around 3,000 meter above sea level. We walked to Long Lake (3,300meter above sea level). I pitched the tent on the higher place of the south of Long Lake at 13:30.  Spectacular place. The weather was bad, and it rained. My wife took an Eve tablet ( containing ibuprofen ) to adapt the high altitude. In the very recent study, very large dose 600mg proved to prevent AMS. But the small dose worked well.

8/14

We started to hike at 7:40. I was not used to a heavy load, so I walked slowly. 11:00 Bishop Pass, We went down a little, 11:50 lunch near the brook, 12:20 started to hike, It began to rain. A horse was guided by a man, because the horse injured his leg. 15:05 the footbridge, It rained terrible. I thought whether I pitched the tent at Dusy Basin, but we advanced more. The thick clouds were going through the valley to north. It was the first time that I looked down such thick rain clouds in JMT. We reached Le Conte on schedule. I pitched the tent on the higher place, where I memorized beforehand. The brook was near. Three men was struck by lightning at Guitar Lake in the same day. We knew it later.

His mother is cheerful, but seemed to be very tired. at 18:00, I pitched the tent at Palisade Lake.  Rosie and Joey went forward, because Rosie had to go to hospital. 7:00 started to hike, 8:50 Center Basin, We met a father and son who came from Washington D.C. 10:30 a short rest at 3450 meter above sea level, 11:50 a short rest at 3600 meter above sea level, where I had done long talk with Eric. 13:40 Forester Pass, the trail was well maintained as a high way. My wife scared when she looked downward. The trail was carved at vertical cliff.
My wife was not tired when she did long descent. I pitched the tent at the higher place near Tyndall Creek as I had planed at 17:20. It was very hot, because sunlight was very strong. So I opened the sleeping bag and put it on the tent. My wife did not know such a simple technique.  If we hike in this pace, only two days were needed. The 3 ultralight hikers did not came, they were tired.

8/21

We fried lots of freeze dry cabbage, It was very delicious.

8/22

I was uneasy in the midnight, There was lightning many times from about 2:00. It rained with thunder at 3:00. We woke up. At 4:00, rain stopped and the thunder went away. We started to hike with head lamps, because it was dark. Around 6:00, the interval of lightning and sound of thunder was 5 seconds, I felt danger, and we sat down at rock shade and waited for a while. Thunder went away, and we felt cold, so we begun to walk. The sky gradually lightened. 7:30 the junction to Mt.Whitney Trail. We put our backpack, and prepared to hike. 7:45 start to hike, There was a sign board, indicated thunder was extremely dangerous. That's right. Fortunately, there are few clouds. 9:30 at the top of Mt.Whitney,  We met Mr. Hattori and his friends again. We took ceremonial photos. We began to hike down immediately, because clouds welled up and I felt danger. We were caught by clouds at Trail Crest, thunder approached,  and the hail attacked us. There is no place to hide in,  so we hurried to hike down. Snow was piled up on the trail instantly. Many hikers also descended hastily, when we looked back near Consultation Lake. Descending from the lake, snow melted, and changed to cold puddle. In normal condition, we are caught up by American hikers, because we were slow, But in this occasion, we seldom were caught up. Several person fell down to avoid puddles,  because they who wore shoes.  Because we were boots, we were not influenced by the puddle of the ice. We I took a break near Mirror Lake at 15:00. The weather was turned fine, and , and the fear of the snowstorm disappeared. We ate potato salad and energy bars. 15:30, started to hike, There were many switchback. At 18:00 The end of trail. My wife is cheerful. Mr.Hattori invited us to the car, but we could not ride, because of excess of  number of person. When I gave the signature of the hitchhike at the usual place, a car approached immediately and we got a ride. I am always lucky. The driver and his friends did not not talk in English. They were Hungarians, The driver was a refuge,  and living in U.S.A. He probably would succeed in work. He was guiding his friends for sightseeing  He introduced good motel to us, so we checked in the same motel. Because it was 19:00, we took a shower hastily , went Merry-Go-Round,  and ate fully Chinese food. Afterwards, we went to the supermarket, and bought lots of fruits and breads for breakfast.

8/23

We enjoyed zero day at Lone Pine. We bought a book and an accessory, and a shorts at the outdoor shop. We ate buffet of Chinese food at Merry-Go-Round as lunch. It costed only 11 dollars. We became full  of  stomach.  As a result, we cooked beef steak and vegetables in the motel. And we ate lots of fruit.

8/24

We went to Lancaster by bus and changed to METROLINK. As usual, the vending machine was difficult to use, So I asked the person to buy our tickets. Several American hikers also needed very long time to buy ticket. As promised, Crazy Doc appeared at Simar station. He took us to toy store (REI) immediately. The house of Crazy Doc was farther than expectation. It was  the quiet residence on the hill. We drank wine at veranda and talked pleasantly, and the dinner was  barbecue like an American. Rabbits and a birds appeared in the garden. I  knew the case of thunder in a guitar lake for the first time.  I ate all food up to the skin of salmon and surprised his family. We continued talking until late at night.

8/25

The breakfast was new bread and fresh juice. Before noon, Crazy Doc sent us to LAX, while doing the guide of shoreline. The boarding procedure was quickly done, because Crazy Dock had done the computer check-in. The hiking of this summer was successful, and we enjoyed very much with Crazy Doc. But he might be worn-out, because he was too kind for us.

John Muir Trail 2012 --- Happy Isles to Bishop

Happy Isles to Bishop

The special point of JMT in this summer

The schedule was tight, because I had to go along with my wife's schedule. The first half should do a little fast, then the latter half of schedule became more slow.
Last summer, my wife could not eat sufficient food, and physical fatigue was intense and, as a result, she suffered acute mountain sickness. To prevent AMS, I decided campsite at the most lower place, and brought abundant Japanese good food. she also took Eve tablet which contained much ibuprofen.
I uploaded my locations and situations to Facebook by using Delorme inReach. This was successful. And I realized that I could send an email to any friend. However, I failed to indicate my location in my homepage.
JMT was very dry and hot. Most flowers were over. In the afternoon, clouds emerged. It rained sometimes, and thunder in the evening. We were able to reach the summit of Mt. Whitney, when thunder went away. But we were assaulted by thunder and hail at the time of a descent from Trail Crest.

Memo of the troubles

There were many troubles and mistakes this time,  probably because I went many times.
It did not become fatal, but put it down briefly.
  • I could not transferred to the planed Shinkansen (Rapid Train), because Thunderbird ( limited express train ) delayed about ten minutes. It resulted 30 minutes delay, no problem.
  • I could not get a boarding pass because the name of the passport did not accord with the name of the reservation when I checked in Singapore Airlines. Unnecessary one character was misprinted when I looked well.   I should buy it by a credit card newly again, or  I should negotiate the agent to publish it again. The agent was British site, so I have no confidence to speak English by telephone. When I explained my situation to the man who seemed to have high some positions, he negotiated the agent. The agent demanded a renewal rate, it costed around 5,000 yen.
  • I took a hotel near LAX around two minutes in foot.  I thought that the breakfast to be ordered beforehand, since there was the guidance card in the room.  I reserved it. But it  was a guidance card of the breakfast of the room service. It was funny.
  • I flew from LAX to Fresno, and rode AMTRAK, went to Merced as I had planed. However, a bus bound for Yosemite did not come. It was abolished when I looked well. I had to wait until half past 5. Meanwhile, I walked around the town and purchased gas canisters, beef jerky, energy bars, etc.
  • At Curry Village, I noticed that I had made a reservation in bed-and-breakfast. I had completely forgotten. No problem. I like buffet in Curry Village.
  • I had made a reservation of hotel with a king size bed at Bishop for my wife. I had no idea that king size bed meant one large size bed in a room. I had expected that two large size beds in a room.

8/5

I woke up at 4:30, 6:00 started to hike, 7:10 Lake Virginia, 8:20 Tully Hole, The trail workers were closing a campsite. He was older than me. I gave him one slice of JMT bread. When he bit it, he asked me how much calories it had. Of course I said to him "I don't know". He ate about half of the slice. I met Rosie and Joey Taylor. They were mother and son. I met them again at Palisade Lakes. 11:50 I started to hike. I chose the most expensive one, because I did not know the menu. After all, it was a steak. I asked the waitress about bread or something. She gave me toasts . I was very thankful, but forgot to eat the apple pie. The American who spoke Japanese taught me that there was  shuttle services ( 9:00 am, and 4:00 pm) to Bear Creek Trail head. The message was written at the board, but I did not notice. Jim's wife was there. She remembered my face. We talked for a while, I got several emails. I went to bed at about 10:00 pm.

8/7

and packed the backpack. I find ten energy bars,  two the freeze dry food from the hikers barrel.
I was the only one to ride  on the shuttle. 9:10 the trail head of Bear Creek Trail. I started slowly.
