John Muir Trail ---South Lake to Lone Pine

From South Lk. to Lone Pine

I was able to stay at Bishop for two night, because I shortened the schedule one day. My wife received the resupplies,  so we checked the food and classified into must-bring foods and must-throw-away food. It was very hot and dry, never became below the freezing temperature. We kept clothes minimum, and decided to send unnecessary equipments, long gaiters, a frying pan, GPS, et. al. to Japan from the post office.

8/13

We left the inn at 8:30,  and walked toward the post office. The backpack was very heavy. It might weighted around 38 kg. A car approached, and "Hiro!"in a loud voice.  It was Jim and his wife Vickie of VVR. I was very astonished. "The small world" Jim said. Yes, it was a very tiny world. I was asked whether I need a ride. "Of course, we need a ride." Jim and Vickie lived in the Bishop, working at VVR, but came back by chance for a few holidays.  Vickie was teaching social media at the college in Bishop He said he came back at past 9:00.

Now, I had to struggle to send a priority mail, because it was a first time for me. I heard the explanation at a window and wrote it a little, and line up in the row again,  and corrected the errors, and lined up again. The infinite loop began.

Jim came and waited all the time, but he became impatient at last and helped me. The loop was ended. I wrote the explanation of content very poorly.  At last, I shipped a priority mail.

Now, our private free taxi started to run. The taxi driver did also a guided tour. I am always lucky in hitchhiking. Next summer, I do not come Bishop, but I would like to hike and live in Bishop, when  I get older. Jim loves Bishops. We love too.

10:00 South Lake. We were not able to climb much, because South Lake is located around 3,000 meter above sea level. We walked to Long Lake (3,300meter above sea level). I pitched the tent on the higher place of the south of Long Lake at 13:30.  Spectacular place. The weather was bad, and it rained. My wife took an Eve tablet ( containing ibuprofen ) to adapt the high altitude. In the very recent study, very large dose 600mg proved to prevent AMS. But the small dose worked well.

8/14

We started to hike at 7:40. I was not used to a heavy load, so I walked slowly. 11:00 Bishop Pass, We went down a little, 11:50 lunch near the brook, 12:20 started to hike, It began to rain. A horse was guided by a man, because the horse injured his leg. 15:05 the footbridge, It rained terrible. I thought whether I pitched the tent at Dusy Basin, but we advanced more. The thick clouds were going through the valley to north. It was the first time that I looked down such thick rain clouds in JMT. We reached Le Conte on schedule. I pitched the tent on the higher place, where I memorized beforehand. The brook was near. Three men was struck by lightning at Guitar Lake in the same day. We knew it later.

His mother is cheerful, but seemed to be very tired. at 18:00, I pitched the tent at Palisade Lake.  Rosie and Joey went forward, because Rosie had to go to hospital. My wife took an Eve to prevent altitude sickness, I also tested with myself. The feeling of pressure of the head disappeared and slept deeply.

7:00 started to hike, 8:50 Center Basin, We met a father and son who came from Washington D.C. 10:30 a short rest at 3450 meter above sea level, 11:50 a short rest at 3600 meter above sea level, where I had done long talk with Eric. 13:40 Forester Pass, the trail was well maintained as a high way. My wife scared when she looked downward. The trail was carved at vertical cliff.
My wife was not tired when she did long descent. I pitched the tent at the higher place near Tyndall Creek as I had planed at 17:20. It was very hot, because sunlight was very strong. So I opened the sleeping bag and put it on the tent. My wife did not know such a simple technique.  If we hike in this pace, only two days were needed. The 3 ultralight hikers did not came, they were tired.

8/21

We fried lots of freeze dry cabbage, It was very delicious.

8/22

I was uneasy in the midnight, There was lightning many times from about 2:00. It rained with thunder at 3:00. We woke up. At 4:00, rain stopped and the thunder went away. We started to hike with head lamps, because it was dark. Around 6:00, the interval of lightning and sound of thunder was 5 seconds, I felt danger, and we sat down at rock shade and waited for a while. Thunder went away, and we felt cold, so we begun to walk. The sky gradually lightened. 7:30 the junction to Mt.Whitney Trail. We put our backpack, and prepared to hike. 7:45 start to hike, There was a sign board, indicated thunder was extremely dangerous. That's right. Fortunately, there are few clouds. 9:30 at the top of Mt.Whitney,  We met Mr. Hattori and his friends again. We took ceremonial photos. We began to hike down immediately, because clouds welled up and I felt danger. We were caught by clouds at Trail Crest, thunder approached,  and the hail attacked us. There is no place to hide in,  so we hurried to hike down. Snow was piled up on the trail instantly. Many hikers also descended hastily, when we looked back near Consultation Lake. Descending from the lake, snow melted, and changed to cold puddle. In normal condition, we are caught up by American hikers, because we were slow, But in this occasion, we seldom were caught up. Several person fell down to avoid puddles,  because they who wore shoes.  Because we were boots, we were not influenced by the puddle of the ice. We I took a break near Mirror Lake at 15:00. The weather was turned fine, and , and the fear of the snowstorm disappeared. We ate potato salad and energy bars. 15:30, started to hike, There were many switchback. At 18:00 The end of trail. My wife is cheerful. Mr.Hattori invited us to the car, but we could not ride, because of excess of  number of person. When I gave the signature of the hitchhike at the usual place, a car approached immediately and we got a ride. I am always lucky. The driver and his friends did not not talk in English. They were Hungarians, The driver was a refuge,  and living in U.S.A. He probably would succeed in work. He was guiding his friends for sightseeing  He introduced good motel to us, so we checked in the same motel. Because it was 19:00, we took a shower hastily , went Merry-Go-Round,  and ate fully Chinese food. Afterwards, we went to the supermarket, and bought lots of fruits and breads for breakfast.

8/23

We enjoyed zero day at Lone Pine. We bought a book and an accessory, and a shorts at the outdoor shop. We ate buffet of Chinese food at Merry-Go-Round as lunch. It costed only 11 dollars. We became full  of  stomach.  As a result, we cooked beef steak and vegetables in the motel. And we ate lots of fruit.

8/24

We went to Lancaster by bus and changed to METROLINK. As usual, the vending machine was difficult to use, So I asked the person to buy our tickets. Several American hikers also needed very long time to buy ticket. As promised, Crazy Doc appeared at Simar station. He took us to toy store (REI) immediately. The house of Crazy Doc was farther than expectation. It was  the quiet residence on the hill. We drank wine at veranda and talked pleasantly, and the dinner was  barbecue like an American. Rabbits and a birds appeared in the garden. I  knew the case of thunder in a guitar lake for the first time.  I ate all food up to the skin of salmon and surprised his family. We continued talking until late at night.

8/25

The breakfast was new bread and fresh juice. Before noon, Crazy Doc sent us to LAX, while doing the guide of shoreline. The boarding procedure was quickly done, because Crazy Dock had done the computer check-in. The hiking of this summer was successful, and we enjoyed very much with Crazy Doc. But he might be worn-out, because he was too kind for us.

John Muir Trail 2012 --- Happy Isles to Bishop

Happy Isles to Bishop

The special point of JMT in this summer

The schedule was tight, because I had to go along with my wife's schedule. The first half should do a little fast, then the latter half of schedule became more slow.
Last summer, my wife could not eat sufficient food, and physical fatigue was intense and, as a result, she suffered acute mountain sickness. To prevent AMS, I decided campsite at the most lower place, and brought abundant Japanese good food. she also took Eve tablet which contained much ibuprofen.
I uploaded my locations and situations to Facebook by using Delorme inReach. This was successful. And I realized that I could send an email to any friend. However, I failed to indicate my location in my homepage.
JMT was very dry and hot. Most flowers were over. In the afternoon, clouds emerged. It rained sometimes, and thunder in the evening. We were able to reach the summit of Mt. Whitney, when thunder went away. But we were assaulted by thunder and hail at the time of a descent from Trail Crest.

Memo of the troubles

There were many troubles and mistakes this time,  probably because I went many times.
It did not become fatal, but put it down briefly.
  • I could not transferred to the planed Shinkansen (Rapid Train), because Thunderbird ( limited express train ) delayed about ten minutes. It resulted 30 minutes delay, no problem.
  • I could not get a boarding pass because the name of the passport did not accord with the name of the reservation when I checked in Singapore Airlines. Unnecessary one character was misprinted when I looked well.   I should buy it by a credit card newly again, or  I should negotiate the agent to publish it again. The agent was British site, so I have no confidence to speak English by telephone. When I explained my situation to the man who seemed to have high some positions, he negotiated the agent. The agent demanded a renewal rate, it costed around 5,000 yen.
  • I took a hotel near LAX around two minutes in foot.  I thought that the breakfast to be ordered beforehand, since there was the guidance card in the room.  I reserved it. But it  was a guidance card of the breakfast of the room service. It was funny.
  • I flew from LAX to Fresno, and rode AMTRAK, went to Merced as I had planed. However, a bus bound for Yosemite did not come. It was abolished when I looked well. I had to wait until half past 5. Meanwhile, I walked around the town and purchased gas canisters, beef jerky, energy bars, etc.
  • At Curry Village, I noticed that I had made a reservation in bed-and-breakfast. I had completely forgotten. No problem. I like buffet in Curry Village.
  • I had made a reservation of hotel with a king size bed at Bishop for my wife. I had no idea that king size bed meant one large size bed in a room. I had expected that two large size beds in a room.

It cost 11 dollars. 13:15 started, 14:50 junction to JMT,  I took a break. 17:00 I found a good tent site, when I looked for it over the rocks. I pitched the tent. At about 17:30, the Koreans living in Los Angeles came, and they pitched the tent near my site. The boy looked very exhausted. I ate dinner fully and slept immediately. I dreamed in English. When I went out to piss at midnight. I saw a bear near a Korean canister in a moonlight. He run away immediately.

I pitched the  tent at 17:40 at Island Pass. There was  some wind, and there are many clouds. I ate fully at 19:50. The weather was restored.

I felt bored the trail going to Red Meadow from the shadow lake, so I went to River Trail. 13:50 gentle rain, I got 1 litter water at the east coast of the Shadow Lake. A blond woman run upward with bottles in hands.  It might be the training of the arm. The rain stopped and I walked along River Trail, but the river was dried up. I was lucky to get 1 litter water at Shadow Lake. River Trail joined PCT.  There were two ford points of the river. I was intended to find campsite. I found good campsite near Agnew Meadow. I pitched the tent. At 16:50, It rained awfully. After dinner, I sent my positional information by the inReach, which worked well even in cloudy weather.  I also talked with my with by the telephone. It rained terrible, and the intense thunder came, too. I was worried about tomorrow morning..

8/5

I took his photograph. I walked in a terminator mode. 18:05 Duck Creek, I should had pitched the tent, but I wanted to go further, because I would like to shorten my schedule at least one day. Therefore I walked. 19:40 Purple Lake. One hour needed to walk to Lake Virginia.  But I can walk from here to VVR in a day. I pitched the tent at the higher place of  lakefront. I made 4 litters water and ate fully.  All was over at 22:00. 13 hours walking.

8/6

I woke up at 4:30, 6:00 started to hike, 7:10 Lake Virginia, 8:20 Tully Hole, The trail workers were closing a campsite. And the good place was blocked by fallen trees.  So the campsite of the Tully Hole  disappeared. 11:00 Squaw Lake, lunch, I talked with Dan, who was the PCT person working to  maintain tails. He was older than me. I gave him one slice of JMT bread. When he bit it, he asked me how much calories it had. Of course I said to him "I don't know". He ate about half of the slice. I met Rosie and Joey Taylor. They were mother and son. I met them again at Palisade Lakes. 11:50 I started to hike. There was no ferry service of VVR, because the water level of Lake Thomas A Edison was very low. So I headed to Goodale Pass. 13:20 Goodale Pass, Wide magnificent scenery. There was a forest fire at the side of Lake Edison. A descent is very long.

I chose the most expensive one, because I did not know the menu. After all, it was a steak. I asked the waitress about bread or something. She gave me toasts . I was very thankful, but forgot to eat the apple pie. The American who spoke Japanese taught me that there was  shuttle services ( 9:00 am, and 4:00 pm) to Bear Creek Trail head. The message was written at the board, but I did not notice. Jim's wife was there. She remembered my face. We talked for a while, I got several emails. I went to bed at about 10:00 pm.

8/7

I was tired, but got up at 6:00. I had intended to be here until the evening, but I changed my mind, and decided to go by the shuttle at 9:00. I folded the tent and selected the food. The  restaurant opened at 7:00, but nobody was. I thought this might be due to the economical recession. I ordered the PCT special. After breakfast, I talked with Jim. I received the resupply
and packed the backpack. I find ten energy bars,  two the freeze dry food from the hikers barrel.
I was the only one to ride  on the shuttle. 9:10 the trail head of Bear Creek Trail. I started slowly.

We are ready to fly

My present location in JMT and messages will be indicated in Viewing Yoshihiro Murakami by Delorme inReach  (It will be effective from the end of July.)

20kg。

I have finished the packing. The resupplies were ready to send to VVR and Bishop. I have decided to use the greatly repaired Solitude of Mountain Hardware for JMT of this summer, which has two compartments, but I use this as one compartment backpack, because the stuff can be packed without a gap.

I have packed eight days food. At present, it weighted around 26kg, but a small amount of beef jerky will be added in U.S.A. Then the total pack weight becomes around 27 kg without water. I will buy some food at Tuolumne Meadows, but in principle, I will walk from Yosemite to VVR with no supply. The pack is too heavy for most of the people, but it is not applicable for me. I will eat sufficient food and walk and camp happily.

The resupplies for VVR is 5+ days food.(6kg)
The resupplies for Bishop is 20 days food. (20kg?)

My wife decided to use the remodeled Variant 37. I changed aluminum stay for a stainless steel pipe, because the back panel was too soft, and reinforced the waist belt with aluminum plates. Then the waist belt became rigid for vertical direction. Her total pack weight is 8.2 kg without water. I never let her carry more stuff this summer, because she suffered acute mountain sickness last summer. And I also be cautious about the rate of climb. The altitude differences from camping to camping should be keep within 500meters.

Palisade Lakes to Bishop --- escape

We got up at 6:00. I ate usual breakfast, but my wife ate soup and bread. She said that she felt better and recovered in a few minutes. I thought that we would like to move a little further to the middle of two Palisade Lakes and to stay all day long. We started to hike at 8:30. The couple we met yesterday ate oatmeal as like it tasted badly. The trail become uphill afterwards. Then nausea of my wife turned worse rapidly. Her symptom must be the acute mountain sickness (AMS). I doubted that she was able to walk through, because there were three high passes further. There was only an escape from Keasarge Pass, but it would take 5 or 6 days from here with my wife's pace. I decided to do an escape route from Bishop Pass. We began to return slowly, and lowered the altitude. My wife's symptom lightened when we went down to the entrance of Palisade Lakes. The lowering 100 meters might had some effect. We were heading to the ideal campsite in Deer Meadow, where I found yesterday. I set up a tent at 13:00. Because there was the stone circle for an open-air fire, I burn all the garbage and lightened. My wife considerably recovered from AMS in the evening. She showed good appetite.

We wake up at 5:00, ate bread, dry mango, and coffee. We started to hike at 7:00. We walked down smoothly, and took a break for cocoa at the usual place at 9:15. We also took a break near the junction of Kings River at 9:55
We ate lunch at the last campsite at 12:07. We started to hike at 12:50, the junction of Bishop Pass at 13:10.
The trail became uphill, but it was well maintained. We passed the first campsite at 14:40. It was located at 2,885 meters altitude. We started to hike at 14:50, the trail became gentle. We arrived at 10,000 feet area at 15:46. Suddenly, it began to climb. We took a short break at foot bridge 16:20. I ate an energy bar. At 16:30, we began to climb. We reached Dusy Basin at 17:40. I set up our tent on the higher place, because there were many mosquitoes. I got water from the river quickly, and purified it in our tent. Our campsite was an ideal place, it had 360 degrees view and less mosquitoes. I used an mosquito coil, then they disappeared immediately. My wife hated couscous as ever and eats potato salads much more.

Jane, Carole, Betsy。

Day hiking の帰り。

We got up at 5:50. We took usual breakfast: Bread, dry mango, and coffee. Our tent was frozen. The temperature was -2 degrees in the room, the outside are -4 degrees. We gathered the frost with a towel and throw away. We started to hike at 7:50. When we walked forward for approximately 30 minutes, we found several tents were set up. We realized that we set up our tent at the entrance of Dusy Basin. Bishop Pass was far. Several snow patches remained at the steep trail. Suddenly, a woman fell back on her back wonderfully in front of me. She said strongly " You! laughed me." I responded " Not laughed ", but I was sure whether I had laughed. Accidentally, we began to talk, since her friends also came. The woman who showed us skillful falling was Betsy. Her friend was Jane and Carole. They were day hikers from South Lake. I heard about the motels of Bishop and a bakery shop, and a big supermarket. I thought that we were able to stay for a few days at least. If we felt uneasiness, then we would move to Lone Pine. It took more than 30 minutes from here to Bishop Pass. The pass was even place with full of rocks. We climbed down a little, found a good place to see of the lakes, and ate an energy bar, bread, and cocoa. We started to climb down. Judging from his walking gait, an elderly man climbed up. When we met, I asked about the hotels in Bishop. He told us that Creekside Hotel(Creekside Inn) was the best.

It considerably took many hours to South Lake. I got water with a water purifier at the first pond. The Chinese American came for rest. He was talkative and macho. I talked about the AMS of my wife. He said "Did you try DIAMOX ?" I responded "No", He said "Do you know Viagra works for AMS, too. However, there is a side effect" with an expression of the joy. Of course it would be a joke. He asked me " Are you married?" I answered "Yes". Then he said "You are happy". I answered "But, I started to hike with 85 pounds backpack. Are you happy with 85 pounds?" He said "In my case, 70 pounds." I said "Then you are happier than me." He was thinking and said "Happiness might be relative." He was quite cheerful and intelligent. I failed to take the photograph. We took a break for approximately 30 minutes, then we started to hike.

We walked down the trail. There was considerable distance to South Lake. At 13:20, Sadderock Lake. We reached South Lake at 15:30. There were a lot of hikers at the parking aria. I was asked "How do you doing? ". I responded "We need a ride." He asked "Do you have a magic?" I said no, then he took out a magic and offered me. Another guy said "I will write for you." So, I took out map, and he wrote "BISHOP" in the backside of the map by a magic. Now, the tool of the proper hitchhike style was completed. I must do good job by all means. I moved to the exit of parking aria, about 20-30 meters away. Two cars went down, but they did not picked up us because they are full. I wave my hand. A truck approached, and the driver said that you should do it about 10 miles ahead then there were many cars. The truck passed by. When my wife took a ceremonial photograph of my hitchhike style, I heard a voice to call for from far away. It was Ms.Christine, who gave us a ride. We met her at South Lake. She was returning from day hike. Her husband was geologist and taught her hiking. She drive carefully. She had an experience in Japan. I said to her anywhere in Bishop was OK. At first, we get off at Tree Motel at the suburbs of the town. It was vacant, but we want motels close to the center of the town, so we got into her car again. She introduced us ELM Motel in the center of the town. An Indian runs it. I thought it might be an American Indian, but it was really an Indian person. She went together for confirmation until our check-in. The rate was cheap with one night 78 dollars. But there was no refrigerator, no telephone, and no wireless LAN, too. I contacted Mr. Otaki walking at the town. He recommended several restaurants, but we went to super market VONS located at the north of the town, first of all. We boiled vegetables, and baked a thick beef steak at the motel.

ELM motel was quiet and comfortable, although there were not enough facilities. We wanted to stay longer, but a reservation was clogged up and we could not stay more than two days. There was Rodeway Inn within the close distance, so we make a reservation. The rate was 72 dollars, as for us, elderly person discount worked. We ate sandwich as a lunch at Jacks Cafe. It was not tasteful as expected. We bought rice, vegetables, and a roasted chicken at VONS for dinner. It became very excellent dinner.

It is a day of the moving to Rodeway Inn. We leave our baggages in the front, because the check-in should be done in the afternoon. We ate lunch in Dennys. It was a completely American lunch. I bought a book of PCT and a book of the flowers at the Wilderness Center. We also did shopping in VONS. The dinner menu was curry, rice, and vegetables. It was very delicious.

Rodeway Inn

At last I succeeded in connecting to WiFi in Rodeway Inn. But, it sometimes disconnected, an electric wave might be weak. The breakfast was enough. There were sweet rolls, bananas, serial, milk, coffee, and juice. I ate about a half-dozen breads. We made ham sandwiches for the lunch. The dinner menu was boiled and seasoned of vegetables using curry roux left at night, gyoza, steak, rice, and grape.

I fully ate breakfast and took a walk until the north end of the town. There was only small stores and an car campsites. We returned to the Inn and and made ham sandwiches for the lunch. We went to the mountain climbing outfitter. The Vasque boots were seemed very good for my wife. We purchased then and threw away the old boots. The old person with mustache was a retired teacher, and helping shop for approximately one hour. The woman had been an English teacher at Kumamoto in Japan. The dinner menu was omelette with rice and fried vegetables. We succeeded too. It was very delicious.

I fully ate breakfast, and we prepared the materials of the sandwich of lunch. We went to the bus stop in front of VONS. Five hikers waited. Two people are talking about Mt.Whitney, where he had a scary experience because snow was frozen and he wore shoes. An Australian man, and a woman also intended to go to Los Angeles. We went to Lancaster by CREST bus and transferred to METROLINK and went to Los Angels.

VVR to Palisade Lake

8/6(Sat)
I woke up at 6:00, and went to the restroom. I ate PCT special as a breakfast slowly. It was very heavy, so I was not able to eat the lunch. I talk with Mr. and Mrs. British, whom I had gotten to know in the ferry yesterday. As for the man, his height was average, but he was a muscular tough guy. He said that they walked about 500 miles from south. His wife wanted to stay at a hotel, so they wanted to go to Lake Tahoe via Fresno. He said that his wife carried only sleeping bag, mattress, and the change of clothes. At 10:30, the group of the Boy Scout came and they were very lively. The leader said that they started from Red Meadow, and it took 6 days to come here. He had blisters on a foot, and said very tired.

I thought that my wife would appear at noon, because it took about three hours form Fresno by car. But my wife did not come. I asked Jim whether it had happened something wrong but he did not know. I moved my tent to the more quiet place, where I had camped last summer. The British man was interested in my tent and want to see it. Then I showed him my tent; Robens Stratos. He said it was well made, but there was a condensation problem in U.K., he was not able to use it.

At last, my wife appeared at about 14:00. The driver of the car was named Tom. She said that Tom picked up two hikers and sent to Lake Florence. So, they were late, but the pickup fee reduced to 85 dollars. The last summer driver also named Tom, who was repairing the air conditioner of the cabin.

I ordered Combo as a dinner. There was much quantity, and my wife was not able to eat. Later, we ate the bread she bought at Fresno, cream cheese, vegetables, and soup in our tent.

8/7(Sun)
We got up at 6:00 and went to a restroom. As a breakfast, I ordered Country Fried Beef, my wife ordered Breakfast Burrito. And we made an additional order of pancakes. It cost about 30 dollars, the same price as PCT Special in two people. As a dinner, I ordered Pulled Poke. I thought it was named by pulled up a bone. It tasted very good. We were not able to eat Apple Pie.

I said good by to Jim, and asked him about Ms.Tsuchiya. Jim explained that the re-supply did not come, and he collected the food and made her the re-supply. But she gave up thru hike, due to the prolonged schedule. We received the resupply and check it. It seemed too much to carry. So I put several packs of couscous and beef jerky into the barrel.

The fat PCT hiker drunk too much and sung with aloud voice until mid night. I said to him to be quiet, but he ignored my caution. I felt unpleasant, but I thought this guy might be the exception. He became quiet approximately 30 minutes after my caution.

テントを撤収、パッキングして重さを量ると、85pounds( 38Kg)!

8/8(Mon)
We got up 6:00 and went to a restroom. I ordered JMT Special as a breakfast. I pack all my equipment in my my backpack, and weigh it. It resulted 85pounds( 38kg )! It is not a joke. We had no supply from VVR to Lone Pine, so, it is unavoidable. My wife carried two breads ( about 4 Kg), so her backpack was 34pounds(15Kg). The ferry had too many passengers and could not depart by overloading. Seven to eight volunteers got off the ferry. My backpack was heavy, but I was able to walk when I was able to carry. At 9:50, we began to walk. At 10:55, the junction of Mono Creek trail. From here, we climbed for a long time. I knew where the water was, so I climbed without water. It took time very much. At 13:30, we rested at the small creek. We ate bread and drunk cocoa. At 14:00, we started to hike. At 15:40, the slope became gentle and approximately level. At 16:20, we took a short rest. After the second brook, I found a small high place, so I decided to camp, because there were few mosquitoes, and it was a scenic and excellent place. The dinner was beef jerky and dehydrated vegetables and couscous.

8/9(Tue)

She was slow, so she could not catch up with us. The Mary Lake was very far. We saw the snowy mountains very near. At 16:00, we arrived Marie Lake. We met Ms. Jess, who had already setup a tent. We set up our tent remote place from her tent. I made 6 litter water, and washed clothes. I bake the pancake which I picked up from Barrel. It smelled slightly strange, but eatable. The apple syrup tasted terrible. Other menus of the dinner were potato salad, soup, dry beef and vegetables.

When couscous was hard, its taste became slightly better.

He said that a Japanese woman camped near here, wanted to meet Japanese people. She was southbound, so I thought we will meet soon. At 10:30, the famous river crossing of Evolution Creek. But the water level was unexpectedly low. We took lunch on a rocky place, because there were a lots of mosquitoes near the creek. At 13:30, we started to hike. At 15:30, McClare Ranger Station. We took a break and ate an energy bar and cocoa. We passed away Colby Meadow and we set up our tent on the rock, because there were a lots of mosquitoes in lower place. We took lunch, seeing meadows and pond. Ms.Jess went forward slowly. We had a pain in the muscle of the foot, but the pain disappeared after we ate JMT bread immediately. We were astonished the power of JMT bread. At 15:00, we arrived La Conte Ranger Station. Ms.Jess appeared. Ranger was absent. I purified 2 litters water. We walked further. I found an ideal campsite soon. There was a fire stone and the river run near. The shortcoming point was it was located near the trail, but I knew there was no good place for camping until Grouse Meadow. Thus, I set up a tent at 16:30. We spend slowly. At 18:00, I set up our tent at an entrance of Palisade Lake. I purified 4 litters water. The usual dinner, and we slept. But, my wife waked in the midnight. She appealed a rapid pulse, lose bowels, and nausea. I thought there was a possibility of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) and if she was AMS there was no way to cure except climbing down. But we should wait until morning because it was midnight.
