John Muir Trail 2019 (5) Le Conte to Twin Lakes

8/29

We started to hike at 7:40. Le Conte Ranger Station at 9:40, took a short break. It took time because Chieko's walking speed became slow. We hike down along the Middle Fork, passed Grouse Meadow, and took a lunch at the campsite near the junction with Palisade Creek at 12:30.

We started again at 13:15, climbed along the Palisade Creek. We crossed several familiar tributaries in the evening. It was at around 17:00.  I searched the comfortable campsite, where we had rested one night, because Chieko had gotten altitude sickness at Palisade Lake. But I could not find it.  As the time limit was approaching, I walked a little further without my backpack. Let Chieko wait. Soon I found a trail builder's tent in the right forest. Within minutes, I found the campsite.

I returned to Chieko. She was a little impatient,  let her go ahead. I followed her. She past the campsite and went further. I left my backpack, ran and caught up her. She said that there were no trail builder's tent nor the campsites. It was clearly visible for me, but it was not for her. This is the lesson that teams should never break up (keep the distance within 50 meter). We pitched our tent at 17:20.

8/30

We start to hike at 8:00, and climbed the Golden Staircase slowly. Golden Staircase was named because it was built with a lot of money. It took a couple of hours to climb the switchbacks. We headed for the campsite near the water, hiked the high trail along the lower Palisade Lake. However, the time expired and we had lunch at the campsite just before the water at 12:30.

We stated at 13:15. I thought we could reach Mather Pass by 15:00 p.m., but we reached there at 16:30. Fortunately, the weather was perfect. We climbed down to Upper Basin, and got water from the pond. We walked further for around 30 minutes, then pitched our tent at 17:30. This place is my favorite place where I pitched my tent several times. The main dish of dinner was vegetable rice and tuna picked up at VVR.

8/31

We started to hike at 7:30, walked for a while. I met and talk to an American hiker coming from the other side. When I asked the woman, she excited and talked too quick to understand the meaning. The next time, I asked a male hiker. He said "pretty easy".  It may be.

Chieko was tired. Therefore, I gave up the cross-country and hike the trail to South Fork's normal crossing point at 10:15. There was a log bridge to the middle island. It was easy halfway, but then it was difficult at the end. I fell in the water. My backpack was very heavy and it took time to crawl up. I said Chieko to cross the shallow place.

It is safer to wet the boots than to walk on the log bridge. It took time to change our socks. Chieko got wets again in another small creek. I met a female hiker, then I said to her not to walk on the log bridge and to enter the shallow place on the left. After climbing the long switchbacks, we took lunch at 12:10. We started to hike at 13:10.  Lake Marjorie at 14:00.

It is a mild climb to Pinchot Pass, but it took time. We arrived at 16:15. An American hiker was. So let him take our picture. It also took time to go down. On the way, a male hiker who caught up asked me " Is there was a good campsite?". " There is a lake in the right side when you hike down for around 30 minutes, then you can find many campsites near the lake", I answered. Later, I found he pitched the tent near the trail,  not near the lake. It was late but I headed for the usual campsite near Twin Lakes. I pitched our tent at 18:30. The main dish was carrot rice and mirinboshi.
