John Muir Trail ---South Lake to Lone Pine

From South Lk. to Lone Pine

I was able to stay at Bishop for two night, because I shortened the schedule one day. My wife received the resupplies,  so we checked the food and classified into must-bring foods and must-throw-away food. It was very hot and dry, never became below the freezing temperature. We kept clothes minimum, and decided to send unnecessary equipments, long gaiters, a frying pan, GPS, et. al. to Japan from the post office.

8/13

We left the inn at 8:30,  and walked toward the post office. The backpack was very heavy. It might weighted around 38 kg. A car approached, and "Hiro!"in a loud voice.  It was Jim and his wife Vickie of VVR. I was very astonished. "The small world" Jim said. Yes, it was a very tiny world. I was asked whether I need a ride. "Of course, we need a ride." Jim and Vickie lived in the Bishop, working at VVR, but came back by chance for a few holidays.  Vickie was teaching social media at the college in Bishop He said he came back at past 9:00.

Now, I had to struggle to send a priority mail, because it was a first time for me. I heard the explanation at a window and wrote it a little, and line up in the row again,  and corrected the errors, and lined up again. The infinite loop began.

Jim came and waited all the time, but he became impatient at last and helped me. The loop was ended. I wrote the explanation of content very poorly.  At last, I shipped a priority mail.

Now, our private free taxi started to run. The taxi driver did also a guided tour. I am always lucky in hitchhiking. Next summer, I do not come Bishop, but I would like to hike and live in Bishop, when  I get older. Jim loves Bishops. We love too.

10:00 South Lake. We were not able to climb much, because South Lake is located around 3,000 meter above sea level. We walked to Long Lake (3,300meter above sea level). I pitched the tent on the higher place of the south of Long Lake at 13:30.  Spectacular place. The weather was bad, and it rained. My wife took an Eve tablet ( containing ibuprofen ) to adapt the high altitude. In the very recent study, very large dose 600mg proved to prevent AMS. But the small dose worked well.

8/14

We started to hike at 7:40. I was not used to a heavy load, so I walked slowly. 11:00 Bishop Pass, We went down a little, 11:50 lunch near the brook, 12:20 started to hike, It began to rain. A horse was guided by a man, because the horse injured his leg. 15:05 the footbridge, It rained terrible. I thought whether I pitched the tent at Dusy Basin, but we advanced more. The thick clouds were going through the valley to north. It was the first time that I looked down such thick rain clouds in JMT. We reached Le Conte on schedule. I pitched the tent on the higher place, where I memorized beforehand. The brook was near. Three men was struck by lightning at Guitar Lake in the same day. We knew it later.

His mother is cheerful, but seemed to be very tired. at 18:00, I pitched the tent at Palisade Lake.  Rosie and Joey went forward, because Rosie had to go to hospital. My wife took an Eve to prevent altitude sickness, I also tested with myself. The feeling of pressure of the head disappeared and slept deeply.

8/16

7:00 started to hike, 8:50 Center Basin, We met a father and son who came from Washington D.C. 10:30 a short rest at 3450 meter above sea level, 11:50 a short rest at 3600 meter above sea level, where I had done long talk with Eric. 13:40 Forester Pass, the trail was well maintained as a high way. My wife scared when she looked downward. The trail was carved at vertical cliff.
My wife was not tired when she did long descent. I pitched the tent at the higher place near Tyndall Creek as I had planed at 17:20. It was very hot, because sunlight was very strong. So I opened the sleeping bag and put it on the tent. My wife did not know such a simple technique.  If we hike in this pace, only two days were needed. The 3 ultralight hikers did not came, they were tired.

8/21

We fried lots of freeze dry cabbage, It was very delicious.

8/22

I was uneasy in the midnight, There was lightning many times from about 2:00. It rained with thunder at 3:00. We woke up. At 4:00, rain stopped and the thunder went away. We started to hike with head lamps, because it was dark. Around 6:00, the interval of lightning and sound of thunder was 5 seconds, I felt danger, and we sat down at rock shade and waited for a while. Thunder went away, and we felt cold, so we begun to walk. The sky gradually lightened. 7:30 the junction to Mt.Whitney Trail. We put our backpack, and prepared to hike. 7:45 start to hike, There was a sign board, indicated thunder was extremely dangerous. That's right. Fortunately, there are few clouds. 9:30 at the top of Mt.Whitney,  We met Mr. Hattori and his friends again. We took ceremonial photos. We began to hike down immediately, because clouds welled up and I felt danger. We were caught by clouds at Trail Crest, thunder approached,  and the hail attacked us. There is no place to hide in,  so we hurried to hike down. Snow was piled up on the trail instantly. Many hikers also descended hastily, when we looked back near Consultation Lake. Descending from the lake, snow melted, and changed to cold puddle. In normal condition, we are caught up by American hikers, because we were slow, But in this occasion, we seldom were caught up. Several person fell down to avoid puddles,  because they who wore shoes.  Because we were boots, we were not influenced by the puddle of the ice. We I took a break near Mirror Lake at 15:00. The weather was turned fine, and , and the fear of the snowstorm disappeared. We ate potato salad and energy bars. 15:30, started to hike, There were many switchback. At 18:00 The end of trail. My wife is cheerful. Mr.Hattori invited us to the car, but we could not ride, because of excess of  number of person. When I gave the signature of the hitchhike at the usual place, a car approached immediately and we got a ride. I am always lucky. The driver and his friends did not not talk in English. They were Hungarians, The driver was a refuge,  and living in U.S.A. He probably would succeed in work. He was guiding his friends for sightseeing  He introduced good motel to us, so we checked in the same motel. Because it was 19:00, we took a shower hastily , went Merry-Go-Round,  and ate fully Chinese food. Afterwards, we went to the supermarket, and bought lots of fruits and breads for breakfast.

8/23

We enjoyed zero day at Lone Pine. We bought a book and an accessory, and a shorts at the outdoor shop. We ate buffet of Chinese food at Merry-Go-Round as lunch. It costed only 11 dollars. We became full  of  stomach.  As a result, we cooked beef steak and vegetables in the motel. And we ate lots of fruit.

8/24

We went to Lancaster by bus and changed to METROLINK. As usual, the vending machine was difficult to use, So I asked the person to buy our tickets. Several American hikers also needed very long time to buy ticket. As promised, Crazy Doc appeared at Simar station. He took us to toy store (REI) immediately. The house of Crazy Doc was farther than expectation. It was  the quiet residence on the hill. We drank wine at veranda and talked pleasantly, and the dinner was  barbecue like an American. Rabbits and a birds appeared in the garden. I  knew the case of thunder in a guitar lake for the first time.  I ate all food up to the skin of salmon and surprised his family. We continued talking until late at night.

8/25

The breakfast was new bread and fresh juice. Before noon, Crazy Doc sent us to LAX, while doing the guide of shoreline. The boarding procedure was quickly done, because Crazy Dock had done the computer check-in. The hiking of this summer was successful, and we enjoyed very much with Crazy Doc. But he might be worn-out, because he was too kind for us.

John Muir Trail 2012 --- Happy Isles to Bishop

Happy Isles to Bishop

The special point of JMT in this summer

The schedule was tight, because I had to go along with my wife's schedule. The first half should do a little fast, then the latter half of schedule became more slow.
Last summer, my wife could not eat sufficient food, and physical fatigue was intense and, as a result, she suffered acute mountain sickness. To prevent AMS, I decided campsite at the most lower place, and brought abundant Japanese good food. she also took Eve tablet which contained much ibuprofen.
I uploaded my locations and situations to Facebook by using Delorme inReach. This was successful. And I realized that I could send an email to any friend. However, I failed to indicate my location in my homepage.
JMT was very dry and hot. Most flowers were over. In the afternoon, clouds emerged. It rained sometimes, and thunder in the evening. We were able to reach the summit of Mt. Whitney, when thunder went away. But we were assaulted by thunder and hail at the time of a descent from Trail Crest.

Memo of the troubles

There were many troubles and mistakes this time,  probably because I went many times.
It did not become fatal, but put it down briefly.
  • I could not transferred to the planed Shinkansen (Rapid Train), because Thunderbird ( limited express train ) delayed about ten minutes. It resulted 30 minutes delay, no problem.
  • I could not get a boarding pass because the name of the passport did not accord with the name of the reservation when I checked in Singapore Airlines. Unnecessary one character was misprinted when I looked well.   I should buy it by a credit card newly again, or  I should negotiate the agent to publish it again. The agent was British site, so I have no confidence to speak English by telephone. When I explained my situation to the man who seemed to have high some positions, he negotiated the agent. The agent demanded a renewal rate, it costed around 5,000 yen.
  • I took a hotel near LAX around two minutes in foot.  I thought that the breakfast to be ordered beforehand, since there was the guidance card in the room.  I reserved it. But it  was a guidance card of the breakfast of the room service. It was funny.
  • I flew from LAX to Fresno, and rode AMTRAK, went to Merced as I had planed. However, a bus bound for Yosemite did not come. It was abolished when I looked well. I had to wait until half past 5. Meanwhile, I walked around the town and purchased gas canisters, beef jerky, energy bars, etc.
  • At Curry Village, I noticed that I had made a reservation in bed-and-breakfast. I had completely forgotten. No problem. I like buffet in Curry Village.
  • I had made a reservation of hotel with a king size bed at Bishop for my wife. I had no idea that king size bed meant one large size bed in a room. I had expected that two large size beds in a room.

High Sierra was dry, and all the creek dried up, too. I taught American hikers where the water was near Mt. Clouds Rest. 9:00 Colombia Finger, 10:00 near Cathedral Lakes. 12:50 Tuolumne Store. I ordered the hamburger called Today's special, because it was the fastest. It cost 11 dollars. 13:15 started, 14:50 junction to JMT,  I took a break. 17:00 I found a good tent site, when I looked for it over the rocks. I pitched the tent. At about 17:30, the Koreans living in Los Angeles came, and they pitched the tent near my site. The boy looked very exhausted. I ate dinner fully and slept immediately. I dreamed in English. When I went out to piss at midnight. I saw a bear near a Korean canister in a moonlight. He run away immediately.

8/3

6:40 started to hike. Koreans made the fire, the boy looked very tired. I wanted to give him a energy bar, but restrained because Tuolumne was near. 10:15 footbridge, 11:00 the usual campsite of upper Lyell Canyon, I took lunch under the shade of a tree. 11:30 started, 13:10 Donohue Pass. many clouds. I took a break. 15:30 the junction to Mary Lakes. I passed by, because my  schedule was tight. 16:20 the junction to Rush Creek Trail. It was thunder, and  black clouds in the far distance. The gentle rain fell, but, fortunately, did not approach. I pitched the  tent at 17:40 at Island Pass. There was  some wind, and there are many clouds. I ate fully at 19:50. The weather was restored.

8/4

アメリカ人にshaving in the shadow と言われた。

The American hiker said to me "shaving in the shadow".  I am not good at speaking English, but Americans speaks me without mercy, because I may be recognized as an American. I felt bored the trail going to Red Meadow from the shadow lake, so I went to River Trail. 13:50 gentle rain, I got 1 litter water at the east coast of the Shadow Lake. A blond woman run upward with bottles in hands.  It might be the training of the arm. The rain stopped and I walked along River Trail, but the river was dried up. I was lucky to get 1 litter water at Shadow Lake. River Trail joined PCT.  There were two ford points of the river. I was intended to find campsite. I found good campsite near Agnew Meadow. I pitched the tent. At 16:50, It rained awfully. After dinner, I sent my positional information by the inReach, which worked well even in cloudy weather.  I also talked with my with by the telephone. It rained terrible, and the intense thunder came, too. I was worried about tomorrow morning..

8/5

I waked up at 5:30, 6:50 started to hike, 8:10 Minaret Falls,  small waterfalls. 9:00 Devils PostPile,  I throw garbage into a trash box. I felt the distance was very long.  9:30 Mule Cafe. I ordered Packer's Special and coffee. Three pieces of pancakes, sausages, and eggs. It costed 20 dollars including a tip. I felt expensive.  There were many hikers who did not enter, because U.S.A. was economical recession. I ate fully. 10:20 started to hike,  12:20 Red Corn,  13:40 last summer's campsite, where Thumb was seen. 14:40 Deer Creek. I got 1 litter water. I talked with Mr. Stewart for approximately 30 minutes. His knee was bad and he hiked slowly. He said he got  a 44-day permit. I talked about John Muir, that he was not a through through hiker, he was an explorer of nature. I took his photograph. I walked in a terminator mode. 18:05 Duck Creek, I should had pitched the tent, but I wanted to go further, because I would like to shorten my schedule at least one day. Therefore I walked. 19:40 Purple Lake. One hour needed to walk to Lake Virginia.  But I can walk from here to VVR in a day. I pitched the tent at the higher place of  lakefront. I made 4 litters water and ate fully.  All was over at 22:00. 13 hours walking.

8/6

I woke up at 4:30, 6:00 started to hike, 7:10 Lake Virginia, 8:20 Tully Hole, The trail workers were closing a campsite. And the good place was blocked by fallen trees.  So the campsite of the Tully Hole  disappeared. 11:00 Squaw Lake, lunch, I talked with Dan, who was the PCT person working to  maintain tails. He was older than me. I gave him one slice of JMT bread. When he bit it, he asked me how much calories it had. Of course I said to him "I don't know". He ate about half of the slice. I met Rosie and Joey Taylor. They were mother and son. I met them again at Palisade Lakes. 11:50 I started to hike. There was no ferry service of VVR, because the water level of Lake Thomas A Edison was very low. So I headed to Goodale Pass. 13:20 Goodale Pass, Wide magnificent scenery. There was a forest fire at the side of Lake Edison. A descent is very long.
I take a short break in the shade of a tree at 14:30. I meet the American who spoke Japanese. He had worked as an engineer in Tokyo. He accompanied a pretty daughter. 15:30 the junction to Graveyard Lakes, There were similar meadows, It was very long to VVR.  I walked in a high pitch for around 2 hours. 19:00 Check-in of VVR. 12.5 hours walking.I delayed one hour than I had expected. I was very tired, and breath did not calm down. At first I pitched the tent,  ate dinner, and a shower afterwards. I chose the most expensive one, because I did not know the menu. After all, it was a steak. I asked the waitress about bread or something. She gave me toasts . I was very thankful, but forgot to eat the apple pie. The American who spoke Japanese taught me that there was  shuttle services ( 9:00 am, and 4:00 pm) to Bear Creek Trail head. The message was written at the board, but I did not notice. Jim's wife was there. She remembered my face. We talked for a while, I got several emails. I went to bed at about 10:00 pm.

8/7

I was tired, but got up at 6:00. I had intended to be here until the evening, but I changed my mind, and decided to go by the shuttle at 9:00. I folded the tent and selected the food. The  restaurant opened at 7:00, but nobody was. I thought this might be due to the economical recession. I ordered the PCT special. After breakfast, I talked with Jim. I received the resupply
and packed the backpack. I find ten energy bars,  two the freeze dry food from the hikers barrel.
I was the only one to ride  on the shuttle. 9:10 the trail head of Bear Creek Trail. I started slowly.

We are ready to fly

My present location in JMT and messages will be indicated in Viewing Yoshihiro Murakami by Delorme inReach  (It will be effective from the end of July.)

20kg。

I have finished the packing. The resupplies were ready to send to VVR and Bishop. I have decided to use the greatly repaired Solitude of Mountain Hardware for JMT of this summer, which has two compartments, but I use this as one compartment backpack, because the stuff can be packed without a gap.

I have packed eight days food. At present, it weighted around 26kg, but a small amount of beef jerky will be added in U.S.A. Then the total pack weight becomes around 27 kg without water. I will buy some food at Tuolumne Meadows, but in principle, I will walk from Yosemite to VVR with no supply. The pack is too heavy for most of the people, but it is not applicable for me. I will eat sufficient food and walk and camp happily.

The resupplies for VVR is 5+ days food.(6kg)
The resupplies for Bishop is 20 days food. (20kg?)

My wife decided to use the remodeled Variant 37. I changed aluminum stay for a stainless steel pipe, because the back panel was too soft, and reinforced the waist belt with aluminum plates. Then the waist belt became rigid for vertical direction. Her total pack weight is 8.2 kg without water. I never let her carry more stuff this summer, because she suffered acute mountain sickness last summer. And I also be cautious about the rate of climb. The altitude differences from camping to camping should be keep within 500meters.

Mt. Kinposan and Oodarumi pass

The first day

We went to Nirasaki by JR ( Japanese rail train). We got off bus in front of Mizugaki mountain cottage at  12:20. There were two kind of bus rout: one is nonstop bus, the other is transit bus.  Companies are different, but departure time is the same. Because the nonstop bus runs in the countryside, it may be scenic. Too late. We failed to ride on the nonstop bus.

At first, the trail is gentle, and gradually becomes steeper. At 13:50, We reached Fujimidaira shelter hut. No one in the hut. The upper Dainichi shelter hut is uninhabited and the tent site charges should be payed here.

I ate bananas and a rice ball , and wait for a while. A considerable obese man and the woman were climbing slowly, carried large baggage on their backs. They were the manager of the huts. We finished a check-in procedure. We talk with them for a while and left at 14:20.

At about 16:00, We arrived at the Dainichi shelter hut. No one there. The whole tent site was for us. I selected the best place. Dinner menu is fried sausage and  vegetables and instant whole rice, mashed potatoes, a bean, and soup.

The second day

We woke up at 5:00 am. Our breakfast menu is JMT bread, cheese, mango, coffee. We started to hike   at 6:40. The trail frozen up when we went for a while,  and was suddenly became steep. No one cannot walk without crampons. We took a I take a short break at Dainichi rock at 8:00.

The snow was deep, but does not sink very much, when I walk on the ridge. On the map of Shobunsha Co., there are many mistakes: the place  of Sunabarai no Kashira was wrong.  It is a place of 2,415m,  more at the upper part. In fact, there is  a steep firm snow just before that. The master of Fujimidaira shelter hut said two men fell in dozens of meters from Sunabarai no Kashira. but they survived.

I was trapped with soft snow in this place, and was not able to get up, because of 30 kg  backpack,  I slid down for a 1-2m upswing and stopped slipping down with a heel of the right foot.
I did well, but the epidermis nearly the right elbow was widely removed, and blood oozed out red-hot.

We took a break at the head of the head of Sunabarai. At some progress, 10:50, I treat the wound near the junction of Mt Kinpo shelter hut.  I set up a wound patch, but there is no large patch,  because I skimped. I used 3 middle sized patches. I did not feel the pain so much only by the epidermis of the skin having come off. Because a large area was bright red, it might be appeared to be a serious wound.

12: 05 , Gojoiwa rock,  the summit was near, but we found a good place for lunch at the rock shade. A lunch menu was bread, cheese and the cocoa. There was melting  snow in the slightly remote place. It was a puddle of approximately 3 centimeters depth. I pumped up by Sweet Water, and got secure drinking water of 3 liters.

We stated to hike at 12:55. We stood on the east side of the summit. The ridgeline is smooth, and the snow was firm. We felt it was very easy to hike to Oodarumi shelter hut. But it was completely wrong. When we lowered some altitude and enter the forest zone, I sank to a knee. When I sank to a thigh and fall down, I cannot stand up because a backpack was very heavy. I needed a help of my wife.

We proceeded to a winding trail at the north side of Mt. Tetsusan at 14:40.  The snow was very deep and soft. We sinks to a knee. We met a man, who caught up with us during a break. He was completely exhausted and looked like a sleepwalker. He had to go to shelter hut, because he carried only small day pack. When he fell into the snow, he was not able to get up, so I helped him. We became slightly afraid that he could not go to Oodarumi shelter hut. We are full-equipped, and had full of food, we did not need to go further. I thought it was better to go in the next morning, because snow may be firm.

We set up a tent by 3:40 at the lower place between Mt. Tetsusan and Mt. Asahidake. We rested  and idled down. Young man happened to pass. He looked very tired and sweat very much. He wore clothes as like the fashion model of the outdoor magazine. He wanted to go to Oodarumi pass, because he did not want to melt snow.

I melt snow with Primus Eta Packlite, which was very effective, and purified by the water filter. I obtained 5 litters water. Our dinner menu was was fried salami sausage and  vegetables and instant whole rice, mashed potatoes, and soup. I added oyster source as a secret ingredient a little.

Two men happened to pass. They said they would like to go to Oodarumi shelter hut, even in night, they would used head lamps. These two men also seemed to be very fatigued, too.  We were very relaxed and I said them to do the best.  My wife's sleeping bag was winter usage of Marmot ( around 1.4kg ) and a new product of Downmat UL. and I also added thin tent mat for warmth. We were very warm and comfortable. We seemed to be able to sleep easily. The  temperature did not fall very much and it was around 5 degrees at night.

The third day

We got up at 4:00. Bread, cheese, a mango, coffee. We carried 1 litter for each. it was enough because we would go to Oodarumi shelter hut in the morning. I was surprised to watch the peg of the tent. Approximately 5 centimeters of heads appeared. That is,  approximately 5 centimeters of snow melted in a night. Temperature was too high. We started to hike at 6:40. When we proceeded a little, we found the traces of two tents at 6:40. It must be the trace of the two men, passed last evening. At 7:40, We reached Mt. Asahidake. There was a very steep icy climb before the summit. My wife was very exhausted, because she used micro spike. At 8:50, Asahi pass, At 10:00 Oodarumi shelter hut.

We met the young man, who wore the fashion model like clothes. He lay down and rested. He seemed to be very fatigued, and said he set up a tent before Mt. Asahidake, because he was not able to walk due to the soft snow. After all,  a duo pitched a tent.

The camping rate was cheap, it was 600 yen.  But, the water place was frozen. The restroom was an excellent public toilet along the road. We ordered vegetable curry and rice of the shelter  hut, because it was the only possible menu. The master of the hut said all the food must be kept for the guests of the reservation.  We got 2 litters water from this hut. The master said that he was able to  give a little more because there are few visitors. But,  I obtained approximately 6 liters with the water purifier because the small amount of water flowed on the asphalt pavement. Coffee is necessary for curry and rice. I made coffee by using JAVA Drip and ate energy bar ( SOYJOY ) and rested several hours.

In the evening,  3 men arrived. They were completely exhausted. They hiked from Fujimidaria desperately. They were seized with fear, and they gave up to hike through the ridge. They wanted to end up here, and to go to the direction of Enzan.

The dinner menu was the  freeze dry cabbage with salami sausage by Chinese taste. Other menus are salad of mashed potatoes and the mayonnaise and soup.

The fourth day

We got up at 4:30.  My wife was not able to sleep. A bad sign. Bread, cheese, a mango, coffee. I persuaded her and hiked to Mt. Kokushigatake. We started to hike at 6:05. Temperature was high, and snow was soft. I sunk to a knee. We reached the garden of the dream. It was very scenic, but my wife said that she had no confidence to go through.  I decided to send her to the bus stop at Kawabata Village.

We hike down along the snow covered forest road. We ate bread and cheese as lunch at 11:00 a.m. at the 1,960 meter spot, where the snow gradually disappeared. The snow decreased considerably under 2,000 meter above sea level.  The forest road was very long. The course time of Shobunsha Co. was wrong. The author did not make sure the require time by his own foot. I looked for the forest management hut according to the Shobunsha map, but I could not find out. I found a wide open place at 12:05, where the hut had been built. We reached the junction of Kinposan shelter hut at 13:20. Five or six cars were  in the parking lot. We arrived Kawabatashmo bus stop at 14:10. The bus was 14:20. I hurriedly measured the 5 days instant rice and dehydrated vegetables, soup, and etc., because I intended to go back to the pass and go through  the ridge trail  once again. The bus came, I parted from my wife busily.

I restarted to climb back at 14:30. I walked alongside the the wide road. I reached  Mawarime Daira ( the junction ) at 15:30. I proceeded a little and acquired  1 litter water. There were many signboards prohibiting camping,  I walked forward. At 17:20, I found a good tent site along the forest load. The place was 1,860m spot, located a little higher place than the forest management place. There was running water aside. I got 4 litters water, and washed the underwear and socks.  I walked for around 11 hours,  I was very tired.  The cooking of instant rice was very quick. The dinner menu is the same: the fried salami sausage and  vegetables and instant whole rice, mashed potatoes, and soup. At 18:30, the cooking was over.

The fifth day

It rained gently at night. I woke up at 4:30; bread, cheese, mango, and coffee. I started to hike at 6:00,  the rain stopped. I reached the place at 6:35, where I ate lunch with my wife yesterday. It took approximately four hours yesterday to go down to here. I met a mountaineer who went down at 7:22. I told him the road was very long.  In addition, I met two mountaineers went down.
Because of their good equipment, they must be gave up to hike through the ridge. At last, I reached Ooyurumi pass at 10:10. No one there. There was cold wind and cloudy. I went to the entrance of the public restroom, and sat down at the stair,  because it was very cold. I ate bread, cheese, cocoa for lunch.

There was not water after lunch. I searched the water. I kicked the snow of the gutter of the road and dug it up. Now, I found running water. I obtained 2 litters with a water purifier. A mountaineer with the excellent equipment came down. He said that he climbed Mt. Kokushigatake and he gave up the through hike  because snow state was very severe. He said  it began to rain and no perspective was expected. He would like to walk to Yanagidaira, where there was a campground and lodgings in the midst of Enzan.

I was thinking about whether I should continue to hike for a while. It was like to plunge into the necessary world of snow shoes with barefoot. It was a game of physical strength, a simple muscle game. I thought it was a stupid attempt even when I succeeded the through hike. It is not enjoyable at least. The weather changed for the worse, too. I had 5 days food, but I decided not to continue to hike at 11:00. I went down the forest road slowly. There was much snow left. It was a gentle rain. The weather surely changes for the worse.

Two young men were climbing up and did their best silently. They seemed to be tired from snow. I was worried about them. I found the pole of the tent on the snow in a few minutes. It might be the pole for 3 or 4 person of Big Agnes tent. I thought it might be the expensive tent. There was a possibility of  belonging to the group of three exhausted men, we met yesterday. I did not know their names. And the pole was heavy. I left it there. It would be the damage of around 50,000 yen for the person who lost the pole.  I have a experience of losing tent pole in the cycling tour long time ago. Thereafter,  I put the pole and the tent body in one pack by all means.

It rained intensely at 14:00. I set up a tent beside the forest road, because water flowed through the gutter, and there was the small river, too. I had the plan to go to Hiker's Depot on Saturday, and I should stay several days in a mountain. I had need not to hurry. I started to cook 17:00.
I got tired of salami sausage and boiled dried Takana, and poured into the instant whole rice. In addition, I fried it and add the dried tasted tips of fish. It was delicious. I also made salad of mashed potatoes and mayonnaise, and the soup. I failed to charge the smartphone from the power charger of enelop. I was troubled very much. I should reconsider the electric system.

The sixth day

I got up before 5:00. Bread, cheese, a mango, and the coffee. It stopped to rain. My tent became heavy. I started to hike at 6:00.  I reached Hiroba at 6:20.  The road before Hiroba fell down, and the small hut for construction was built at Hiroba. I was lucky to set up a tent before Hiroba. The road was long and winding, and the altitude does not fall very much. I walked leisurely, because the scenery was excellent. Finally, I reached the gate of the forest road at 7:30.

I arrived Yanagidaira at 8:15. There were only several houses. I look at the Kinpo mountain cottage, but was unmanned. I visited the house nearby. It must be the house of the owner of the cottage. She said all the food was for the booked guest. Then I had no reason to camp at this village, because I could not obtain any food. I borrowed a telephone and said to my wife I was OK, because my smartphone began to run out of battery. My wife sent me several emails, but I could not received them, because the environment was bad. I requested her to book a cheap hotel tonight at Enzan. I would like to walk down to Enzan and, thought about what should I do for a several days. When I watched a map, I found a trail of several hours near Mt.Konarayam. I left Yanagidaira.

I found a hotel with an excellent hot spring near the lake Otome. But it was closed. I walked along the road, but I saw no person and no car. I entered the trail atthe Yanagi Pass. It was a good trail, the atmosphere of the trail reminded me the hiking trail of Kanto aria. It rained mildly. I reached the summit of Mt.Konarayama at 10:40. It took unexpectedly long time. The rain becomes strong, and the wind blew terribly. Fortunately, I found a rest place which had a roof. I ate bread and energy bar for lunch. I received approximately 40 emails with a smart phone. The tonight hotel was decided. It was Rout in Yamanashi, which located within 15-minute walk from Yamanashishi JR Station. The rate was 6,500 yen, which included a breakfast buffet and supper. It was very economical.

I started to hike at 11:00 in the strong rain. I climbed down Hahakoi ( mother loving ) trail. It was a mossed trail. There are many descent of the steep grade of the zigzag. I ended up the trail at 12:15, the forest road appeared. I went down the clean wide forest road for around ten minutes. The man who was taking a break in a car suddenly talked to me "Where are you heading? There is no road over here." I was astonished. I said to him "I am heading to Enzan." He said "It is not a direction to Enzan. This road is under construction. " I confirmed my location was wrong with my GPS. I was in the mountain. I came back to the original place and found the way of an old narrow steep road.

I arrived at the orchard village which was closed at 13:30. I was tired. It was under construction. Several people were working. There was a vending machine of Pepsi and I purchased CC lemon and takes a break. It was a splendid place, where that Shioyama city was able to look around. I got pamphlet of Yamanashi from the manager of the village. He said he had an experience of almost die at Ooyurumi pass, because he was a camera enthusiast, and bring a huge camera to take photographs of Mt. Minposan in December. It snows terribly. He was buried to a waist and could not move, and he had slept a little. Suddenly, the ice fell to his head, and he woke up. He left all the equipment and got out there. He also helped to maintain Ooyurumi shelter hut, which was about to be destroyed under the snow of 3 meters this spring. This orchard village was under construction, because this would be modified to the resort institution. The photographer of TV also came. It would be a great event for Yamanashi city.

I started to walk at 14:00, heading to Enzan. There was a bus stop, but there was no service  until 17:00. I walked along a road, but I could not find out which direction I was heading. At some time, I was walking to the opposite direction. I took out my GPS and aimed at the direction of Kubodaira. I went through a narrow road between the field and joined to the old road. I arrived at the bus stop of Kubodaira at 15:00. There was a bus bound for Yamanashishi JR Station at 15:55. Walking was over. I arrived Yamanashishi JR station around 16:30, a surprisingly small station. There were a few tall buildings at the station square. Route in Yamanashi Hotel was found immediately. I took a bath immediately and was very refreshed. I added salmon salad to a pork cutlet set meal for the dinner. The salad costed only 580 yen,  the quantity was enough. Because I had another serving of the rice. I took nearly two set of meals for the dinner.

I was planed to lecture of introduction of JMT at Hiker's Depot on the evening of Saturday, but there were extremely few participants and therefore did not feel like staying for three days somewhere. When I consulted with radar image, the weather changed for the worse more. It was unlikely continue hiking and camping at another area.  I felt guilty, but I wanted to canceled the JMT lecture.  The breakfast buffet was not splendid, but I ate one dozen omelettes, one  large dish of vegetable salad, a lots of potatoes and bacon, and one dish of fruit, and half dozen of bread. It might be enough for the hotel.

  • Primus Eta PackLite

Yakushima 2012 ---From Onoaida trail to Kusugawa trail.

Approach

I intended to transfer the Thunderbird to the Shinkansen(the bullet train ) bound to Kagoshima at Shin-Osaka station, and to cross the sea by the high speed ship to Yakushima on the day. But, there was an  announcement that there was the information that an umbrella flew in in a railroad before Shin-Osaka station. The Thunderbird stopped for approximately ten minutes and I was not able to transfer to the Shinkansen.  I filed for the refund. I ride on the bullet train bound to Hakata and transfered another train to Kagoshima. It was about half past 4 p.m. when  I arrived.  But I could not go to Yakushima anymore. I checked in Kagoshima Plaza Hotel. The lodging charges are 4,800 yen, and the refund was 5,000 yen, half of the limited express fare of the Shinkansen. It was an accident, but is not bad. I ate dinner  in the hotel's dining room. Not bad.

The first day

The breakfast buffet of the hotel is cheap with 400 yen. I ate a lot of salad. The breads were very tasteful. I ate one dozen.  I walked to the ferry terminal, because there was a high speed ship called Rocket at 9:10. The sea was stormy, but reached Miyanoura without a problem. I wait for the bus and reached  Onoaida-Onsen at 13:00. There was a trouble in Pentax DSLR camera. It was cured when I pulled a battery out, and pushed the switch several times. The Pentax is not for professionals, but it works well most of the time. It took approximately two hours to hike all Janokuci ( the mouth of snake fall ) hiking trail. The course time of the map of Shobunsha is not reliable. I arrived at the rest hut 15:20. There is the suitable campsite if I walk up Onoaida trail for approximately three hours, but I don't want to climb. The sightseeing of the waterfall looked preferable. I put my backpack and I change the RIBZ front pack. There was really little water this year. I come back to the rest hut, and set up a tent. It is an stand alone  type, but the tail of tent must be extended width a trekking pole. At 17:20 I started to cook. The dinner was beef jerky and seasoned of dehydrated vegetables, a potato salad, boiled beans pack, soup.

The second day

I get up at  5:00. I dreamed frequently. Coffee, bread, cream cheese, a mango. The second cup of coffee at 5:30.  The morning start became early, because water was boiled immediately by the  Primus Eta PackLite. I started to hike at 6:30. I took a short break at a 950meter elevation spot. I reached the place, where I set up a tent last year. It took four hours not three hours. I started to hike 10:40,  reached the fording place of Tai no Kawa ( river of sea bream ) 11:25. There was little water, but was hard to pass because rock were big.  I ate lunch at the other side of the river. I started to hike at 11:50. I carelessly slipped at the last river, and falled into the river at 12:07. My left knee was beaten by the rock. There was no injury, but my boots and shorts were  wet. The trail after I crossed the last river was vague. I reached the last flatland facing the Nonki ridge at 13:10. I changed the socks. Nonki ridge trail at 13:10. I tested to upload the photos to Twitter and facebook, because mobile phone became usable. I reached Yogo entrance at 15:30  I met two girls, who descended. I asked to take my photos. I met these girls two days later at the great ancient cedar place once again. I set up a tent near Yodogo hut at 16:30. The pair of a Frenchman and the American woman. They wanted to climb down Onoaida trail, so I taught them  to follow red tape, and suitable place for camping. They used the nature stove, but it smoked. Usually, woods were wet, because of rain. They were simply lucky. The dinner was a fried rice with carrot,  cabbage, and salami sausage, potato salad, boiled and a packed sweetened beans, and soup. The frieze dry cabbage was added with sugar, cooking is difficult. I slept at 19:00. When I slipped into a sleeping bag, I felt cold, but I felt very warm in the midnight.

The third day

The temperature dropped to 1 degree centigrade in the tent at 4:00 a.m. The outside may be below the freezing point. I got up at 5:00;  ate bread, cream cheese, a mango, and coffee. I still have a pain at the knee and my thigh was apt to have convulsions. I took one tablet of antiphlogistic. I started to hike at 6:50. I met a guide with a lot of women. I remembered him. His name was Yoshihara. I had met him in 2004, and hiked with him for several hours. But, he did not remember well. 8:15 Ko-Hananoego,  8:30 Hananoego, I decided to do a side trip to Mt. Kuromidake. I reached the rock just under the peak of Mt.Kuromidake at 9:15. I did not think it was possible to climb the rock of the peak. I returned to the junction at 10:00. There was a good campsite near this junction. 12:50 Mt.Nageishidake. I reached the Mt. Miyanouradake at 12:50. The couple rested at the peak, so I asked them to take several photos of me. 14:15 at the foot of Mt. Nagatadake. I had intended to go to Shikanosawa shelter hut, but I decided to sleep here, because no one there and  I was tired. I reached the peak of Mt.Nagatadake at 15:00, returned the foot, and set up a tent. I started to cook  at 17:00. The slide switch of FM, AM of the radio of DEGEN was broken, but I could hear FM radio.  I charged the cell phone, but the power of Eneloop was not enough. I should bring two alkaline batteries. The dinner menu is cooked salmon over the rice,  fried vegetables, packed bean, and soup.

The fourth day

I felt slightly cold, because the ground was not level, and wind was strong. The minimum temperature in the tent is around 4 degrees centigrade. I got up at 5:20. I ate bread, cream cheese, a mango, and coffee. I could not see the mountains, because of  cloud. It was a good chance to take photos yesterday. I started to hike at 6:40. The mobile phone did not work at the three-way junction. There was a strong wind and cloud at 7:20. I met the members of the Wandervogel club of the university, who were climbing up Mt.Miyanoura. As for the girls, they wore showy clothes as the models in mountaineering magazine. I do not think that clothing is good taste. The cell phone worked at near Hiraiwa. I posted a photo to Twitter and Facebook. I reached the first observatory place at 9:25, new Takatsuka hut at 9:50, and Takatsuka hut at 11:04. Many person rested and had lunch. I met the two girls again near the ancient great ceder.
Furthermore, I meet Mr. Yoshihara again. He was guiding another group. I ate lunch, and started to hike at 11:45. I took a short break at Okabu trail junction at 13:20. The junction of Kusugawa trail at 14:40. Three university students who carried large backpacks seem to be tired. They were climbing up. I told them that there is no suitable campsite to the great ancient ceder. But I should teach them to set up tents at the junction of Okabu trail. 15:40 Tsuji pass. I entered the the Kusugawa trail.  I climb down to the forest road and climbed down to the riverside. I set up a tent at 18:00. It was a very old trail, disappearing, but it was described in the map. There was no red tape. It was completely different from the map. The true trail was  approximately 100 meters of upper reaches from here. The dinner menu is fried rice with vegetables,  salami sausage, potato salad,  a boild bean pack, and soup. The frieze dry cabbage was added with sugar . It tasted badly.

The fifth day

I got up at 5:10. I ate bread,  cheese, a mango,  and coffee. I had enough bread for 4-5 days, and I had enough rice, too. I failed food planning this time. I started to hike at 6:30. I entered  Kusugawa trail again. 7:00 Sambomsugi.( Three ceders ), 9:00 Kusugawa bus stop. The journey ended. There is a high speed ship toppy at 10:45. I arrived at Kagoshima 12:30. I went to  Kagoshima-Chuo Station and reserved the limited express ticket of the next day. I left backpack at the hotel and walked around the streets near Tennmonkan ( astronomy building ) . I bought bread, ham, vegetables, because bread was delicious and very cheap.  I made a huge sandwich at the hotel for dinner. There were vegetables and a side dish in the Amuse building basement close to the station, too. Prices are super low. Kagoshima was a big city. I wanted to live.

  • Primus Eta PackLite
  • Robens Heros

Walk about Noto Peninsula ---Test of Robens Duo and Primus EtaPackLite

<初日>

<二日目>

<三日目>

Robens Myhtos Duo is near perfect. It is relatively light as a double wall tent, very strong, very warm, and very little condensation.

Primus EtaPackLite
The Primus EtaPackLite + MSR flypan system were also very good. This stove is very fast to boil water. I will bring these system for this summer.
