Zero days with Shroomer

7/24(日)

19:15 成田発。非常口側の席を確保したこともあって、シンガポール航空は快適だった。食事もサービスも比較的良い。デルタ航空とは大違いだった。ただ、ほとんど眠れず、ロス到着時はメロメロ。バックパックもなかなか出てこず、取り返すのに2時間もかかった。大滝さんが迎えに来てくれたが、ひどく待たせてしまった。その後、電話のSIMカードを買い、REIでエナジーバーを選び、ホテルへ。大滝さんからビーフジャーキー等を受け取る。夕食はちかくのサラダ・ビュッフェへ。大入り満員で、アメリカ人もサラダを食うのかとびっくりした。夜はパッキング、明日に備える。

Singapore Airlines was comfortable. Both the meal and the service are relatively good. But I can hardly sleep, and the baggage claim was too slow. It took about two hours to get it back. Mr. Ohtaki came to pick me up. He behaved as a trail angel. I bought SIM cards of the telephone, and energy bars in REI. I received beef jerky from Ohtaki at the hotel.

7/25(月)

　6:00に起き、8時過ぎにcheck out。大滝さんがLAXまで車で送ってくれた。LAXからSouthWest 航空でSFOに行くのだが、ネットで予約はしたものの、初体験で何も分からない。すると、通りすがりのアメリカ人が、そこでeticketに交換するのだと教えてくれた。交換して階段を登ろうとすると、そんな大きなバックパックは持ち込めないと、係の人に止められた。荷物を預ける場所は一階にあった。怪しげな英語で、これもクリア。続いてAirportへのCheck inがあり、国際便と同じように手持ちの荷物と身体をscanされる。これは簡単。入ると11時半までやることがない。スターバックスでマフィンとコーヒー。SouthWestの待合室に行く。飛行機は遅れていて、搭乗は12時頃になるという。なんとなく隣の人と話す。太めの初老の男性。アキヒトとテニスをした、ミキモトの招待で10日間、日本のホテルに滞在したという。どうも有名なテニスの選手らしい。12時前に搭乗終了。チケットは回収され、適当な席に座るらしい。小型飛行機だが、快適。チップスやソフト・ドリンクがたくさん出る。無事にSFOに着いた。ただし、SFOのbaggage claimも遠い。バックパックはなかなか出てこない。しかし、奪還に成功。

Next day Mr. Ohtaki sent me to LAX by car. I had to fly to SFO by SouthWest airline. This was my first experience to board a domestic airline. So I knew nothing. I learned from a kind American how to change an internet booking to eticket, I entered the gate successfully, and I had nothing to do until half past 11. I ate a muffin and drink coffee in Starbucks. Then, I went to the waiting room of SouthWest. I talked with a middle aged man. He said that he had stayed for 10 days at the hotel of Japan, played tennis with Akihito, invited by Mikimoto Co.

次はREIに行く。まず、人に聞いて、BARTを目指す。Powell Streetまで切符を購入。ここまでは難なく行けた。問題はサンフランシスコの地図を省略したこと。REIの場所が分からない。適当に記憶に基づいて歩くが、なかなか辿り着けない。アメリカ人に聞くがまずREIの発音が通じない。後でShroomerに聞いた所、大多数の人はREIなんか知らないらしい。大分、手こずったがREIに到着。バックパックを預けて、ガスカートリッジとREPELを購入。帰ろうとすると、バックパックが注目の的。何しろ、REI XTのベルト改造版だから、いろいろ聞かれる。

SouthWest Airlines was also comfortable. I reached the SFO safely. But the baggage claim of the SFO is also slow. My next destination was REI, and I went to Powell Street. The problem was I had not a map of San Francisco. I had an experience to walk to REI last summer, but I could not find out. It took about one hour to find REI, where I bought gas canisters and REPEL. My backpack was remodeled version of REI XT 85, so the staffs pay great attention.

ぶらぶらとPowell Streetまで戻る。REIまでの距離は3Kmくらいか。Shroomerとの待ち合わせには早いので、公園のCafeでアイスティーを飲む。一昨年はカフェモカを頼んだが、甘くて飲めず、ひどい目にあった。17:30 クレジットカードで、North Concord/Martinezまでの切符を買おうとするが、機械が反応しない。隣のアメリカ人によると故障という。故障なのか、仕様なのか、訳の分からない機械が多すぎる。現金で購入に成功。Shroomerは交通渋滞で遅れると言ったが、BARTも10分ばかりの遅れ。ただし、BARTは汚れているが、快適に走る。混雑している。帰宅ラッシュのようだ。

I bought a ticket to North Concord/Martinez by a credit card at 17:30, but a machine does not react. So I purchased a ticket in cash. Shroomer waited for me at Martinez station, although he said that he would delay in a traffic jam. Shroomer was a trail name, since he had professional knowledge of the mushroom and collected and ate mushroom during hiking. His real name was Scott Williams.

18:30頃か、Martinezで下りるとShroomerが待っていた。挨拶を済ませ、車に乗り込む。Shroomerの本名はScott Williams。マッシュルームの専門知識があり、ハイキング中にキノコを採集し、食料に追加する由来からのTrail Nameだ。家はJohn Muir Historic Siteのすぐ裏。平屋の広い家。彼の仕事は、犯罪者のスーパーバイザーで、検事と弁護士の中間的立場から助言をまとめることだった。この種の仕事は日本にはない。今は引退して、ハイキングを楽しめるようになった。今年、CDTをあきらめたのは、結婚生活を継続するためとのことだった。Shroomerは伝統的なカヤックも持っていて、ロシアの古い帽子も制作している。

奥さんのKatieはSocial Workerで、今も忙しそうだ。偶然だが、我々の仕事の専門領域も近い。Shroomerのお姉さんは画家。scratch boardというテクニックで、予め絵の具を塗った板を削って絵を作る。カラーの時も多重に色を塗った板を削って絵を作る。現在もワインのラベルのデザイン中だった。

His house was just at the back of John Muir Historic Site. He worked as a probation supervisor of the criminals for a long time, and now he was retired. He had the traditional kayaks and made Russian old hats. His wife Katie still works as a social worker. His elder sister Sharon was an artist.

夕食のメインはShroomerが担当。バーベキューによるPork Chopsだった。奥さんと彼は過去に非常に肥満していて、唯一成功したのが炭水化物制限のダイエットだった。砂糖や精製された小麦は食べず、brown riceを食べる。それも重さを測って一定量しか食べない。一方、タンパク質の制限なく、野菜も大量に食べる。食生活は基本的に似ていた。

He greeted me with the Pork Chops, but he was doing the diet, which restricted the carbohydrate and ate much vegetables. Our eating habits were basically similar.

7/26(火)

Shroomerはカナダから帰国した直後で疲れていた。本日はMartinez Tourとなった。MartinezはMartiniの発祥の地らしい。酒を飲まないから知らなかった。その後、downtown, 彼が働いていた裁判所近辺を見る。town, city, county, boundaryという順に行政区画が大きくなり、Martinezはcountyの中心らしい。海岸線や彼のランニング・フィールドも見学した。この辺りは自然保護の観点からすべて公園になっている。Land Trust運動の成果だ。Shroomerは主要なメンバーの1人。サーモンや野菜を購入、自宅に戻る。芸術家のお姉さんの写真を撮す。scratch boardというテクニック。blogにuploadしても良いそうだ。夕食は大量の野菜で炒め煮を作る。好評だった。Shroomerはサーモンのオーブン焼きをした。

Shroomer was fatigued, because he had just returned from the backpacking in Canada. So, the Martinez Tour was began. Martinez was the birthplace of Martini. Shroomer guided me to the downtown, office district, and his running field. The majority of his neighborhood becomes park from the viewpoint of conservation of nature. He bought salmon for dinner, and he cooked it by oven. And I cooked a large quantity of vegetables.

7/27(水)

午前中はJohn Muir Historic Siteの見学。Shroomerの隣だが、正面玄関まで車で回る。Danielが我々に付き添って、詳しく説明してくれた。彼の英語は綺麗でわかりやすかった。John Muirの簡単な伝記は数年前に読んだが、全部忘れてしまったので、質問に答えることができない。Muir houseの建築者はDr.Strentzelだった。John Muirは1880年、42歳でDr.Strentzelk]
娘のWandaと結婚し、広大な果樹園を引き継ぎ、さらにそれを大規模化して、巨大な資産家になった。その富と政治力で、ヨセミテ国立公園を初めとして、国立公園のシステムを作り上げた。身体は非常に頑丈でタフだったが、巨大な富を作り、政治力を発揮するなど、我々凡人とは、まったく異なる。

John Muir Historic Site is the neighbor of Shroomer's house, but the entrance was far. Mr. Daniel guided with us and explained the detail of the Historic Site. I had read the brief biography of John Muir several years ago, but I had all forgotten. The builder of Muir house was Dr.Strentzel. John Muir married one of his daughter Wanda at 42 years old in 1880 and succeeded a very large orchard and made it on a large scale more. He was very tough and had wisdom for conservation of nature, he struggled to establish the national park system in Yosemite as a first step.

Shroomerの自宅に戻り、昼食をとってらかYosemiteに出発した。半日のドライブだが、アメリカ人にとっては普通らしい。途中、トンネルビューで休憩。テレビ局のアナウンサーにインタビューされた。木が生い茂ってEL Captainの眺望が妨げられるから切れという議論があるらしい。Shroomerはアメリカインディアンは定期的に焼き払っていたので、切っても差し支えないという意見。私はそのままにしておけという意見。眺望になんか興味ないし。18時過ぎ、カレーヴィリッジにチェックイン。まず、パフェでゆっくりと食事。15ドル。Shroomerは野菜取り放題で大喜び。我々は意気投合した。食後、彼はラップトップでWalk about Martinezの原稿の最終チェック。こちらは先にシャワーを浴びて寝た。

In the afternoon, we began to drive to Yosemite. We took a brief rest at the tunnel view. We were interviewed by the announcer of the TV station. Concerning the vie of EL Captain, the trees grow thick, there was a controversy to cut trees or not. I was a foreigner, so I said it was not necessary to cut trees, because I had no interest of huge rock. We checked in Curry Village at 18:00. We ate dinner at the buffet slowly. Shroomer was delighted facing with huge quantity of vegetables.

7/28(木)

ゆっくり寝て、Shroomerとパフェで朝食を食べまくる。困ったものだ。こいつとは周波数合いすぎ。9時頃にMist Trailへのハイキング開始。Shroomerは長距離ハイカーらしい人を見ると、声をかけまくる。PCTハイカーはインターナショナルで、彼の時はアメリカ、イスラエル、ニュージーランドの人が多かったという。下りてきたハイカーによると、ハーフドーム前後にはかなりの積雪があるという。今年は水量が多いので、文字通りのMist Trailとなった。水しぶきを浴びながら歩く、綺麗な虹が見える。落ちた3名の遺体は見つかっていないという。レインジャーが二人、警戒している。先日も一人、柵を乗り越えて滝の上に入ったらしい。レインジャーはピストルを携帯。義務づけられているという。オーストラリアとニュージーランドから女性二人。三ヶ月も遊んでいる。ゆっくり歩いて5時にカレーヴィリッジに戻った。パフェで大いに食べる。身体の時差調整はまだ不十分。ネットが回復したので、Gmailを読む。

We started to hike to Mist Trail at about 9:00. When Shroomer met the long-distance hiker, he kept to talking to them. According to Shroomer, PCT hiker was international, there were many Americans, Israeli, New Zealander. The hiker said that there was a considerable snow around Half-Dome. Mist Trail was covered by mist, because there was much quantity of water. Two rangers were cautious about people, because 3 person died who entered into the top of the water fall.

7/29(金)

6時半に起きる。Shroomerとパフェへ。本日のハーフディ・ハイクは止めて、9時過ぎにCheckout。Shroomerの車でTuolumneに移動。途中、Olmstead Pointで休憩。Olmsteadは人名。またTeniyaも人名。望遠鏡でハーフドームの垂直のはしごを登る人の列を見る。

We checkout at about 9:00. Shroomer took me to Tuolumne by his car. We took a brief stop at Olmstead Point. Olmstead and Teniya were person's name. We looked at the row of a person climbing the perpendicular ladder of the half-dome with a telescope.

11時半、Tuolumne Storeに着くと、Sugar Momaがいた。Face Bookでのお友達なので、お互いにハグ。PCTハイカーのNo.1(Eric)がいたので、お互いのバックパックを交換して、背負って記念撮影。一日に30マイル歩く気違い、平然と30Kg持ってハイキングする気違いと、まあ似た者同士。Shroomerは延々と他のハイカーとも話し続けた。一応、テントサイトを確認したいので、2時間ほど付き合ったのち、別れた。テントサイトは空いていて、広々とした場所にテント設営。夕食はShroomerが食べなかったパンに、チーズを追加して主食とした。少し買い物をすると15ドル。これならヨセミテでパフェを食べる方が安い。Tuolumneに早めに来て後悔した。夕方、Thunder Storm が始まり、2時間ばかり続いた。暇だから携帯電話でネットをやると、みるみる料金が減った。

We met Sugar Moma at Tuolumne Store. We hugged each other. And we also met PCT hiker No.1(Eric). We exchanged the backpack and took the photos. A PCT hiker walks 30 miles a day, I carry 70 pounds. Both crazy person. Shroomer continued talking with other hikers endlessly. I said good by to him, because I wanted to confirm a tent site. In the evening, it began thunder storm, lasted approximately two hours.
