The Field Test of The Fifty-Two 80 and remodeled RIBZ at Mt.Sougatake

初日 The first day

I hiked to Mt. Sougatake for a field test of The Fifty-Two-80 and the remodeled RIBZ. My total pack weight was about 19 Kg. I went to JR Uozu station in the evening and got on a bus to go to Touzou. I arrived at the bus stop at 16:40. Mt. Sougatake is 1,855m above sea level. I always go to Tousou, hike, climb up, and climb down to the Oritateguchi Station. Therefore, I climb up about 1,750m, and climb down 1,750m. It is a good training course. Mt.Sougatake is a safe mountain, but it is very hard to reach the summit in winter, and several persons disappear in early spring, because, it belongs to an eminent heavy snowfall area.

I met a woman, who measured radiation here and there with a small measuring machine. She proposed a ride to me, but I said I wanted to walk. I walked quicker than usual, because it became dark, and because my movement was not restricted by the new backpack. I thought this backpack was easy to walk. I felt the power from the upper front on the shoulders. Not bad. I passed the campground, proceeded about 500 meters, and set up a tent near the river at 17:30. I purified 4 liters water in the dark. I had changed to Sweet Water. Its pumping was surprisingly easy. The dinner menu was curry and rice, gas flushing boiled beans, onion soup. And an apple and backed cakes as a dessert. I ate all at 19:20.

The second day

I woke up at 4:30. I ate JMT bread, cheese, rehydrate mango, with coffee. I stated to hike at 6:00. It began to bright in the sky. At 7:00, the power plant. I felt my backpack was lighter than usual. My total backpack weight was about 18kg, but my walking speed increased, because my new backpack did not disturb my physical movement. I arrive at the starting point of Mt.Sougatake trail at 8:00. I took a break; ate an energy bar and drank cocoa.
The chocolate bar was delicious (but the cake was bad).

I started to climb at 8:20. At 9:30 1,020m above sea level. I took a break. At 10:40 Mt. Iori, 1,370m above sea level. The snow increased and it became hard to walk. The weather gradually began to worsen. but it would take for 2~3 hours until rain. At 11:50, Mt. Narutani, 1,625m above sea level. I ate JMT bread and cheese as lunch. At 12:50, Yariminoike pond, which was frozen. I broke the ice and purified 1 litter water. I changed to Sweet Water. The pumping was very easy.

At 14:05 the peak of Mt Sougatake. 1,855m above sea level. The depth of snow was 20~30 centimeters. If it was fine, I was going to make a round trip to Mt. Komagatake, but the weather worsen. I began to descend at 14:10. .
The depth of snow in the north slope was 50-60 centimeters. Nobody had walked. When I wend down the steep slope, the depth of snow was around 30 centimeters. But, I felt my legs were unexpectedly light. This may be due to the recent 10km endurance running.

It began to rain 15:07 at last. I attach the rain cover to the backpack and wear a rain suit. I found the footprint of the person who gave up the climbing from Unazuki route. There was the snow still more.
At15:50, the junction to Eboshi Ridge. I felt a pain at the shoulder belt. Then, I adjusted the back length to 21 ( Later, I found I was wrong. Now, my back length set to 19 ).

At 17:00, I arrived the forest road. I deposited my backpack, and went to take the water 4 liters. It became dark. I wore a head lamp. I set up a tent in the usual place at 17:30. I had walked for 11 hours. It was a hard day. The menu of dinner is the fried rice with vegetables and sausage, the gas flushing cooked beans, two kinds of soup."Nyumen" of the freeze dry was unexpectedly delicious. The wind and rain was sometimes strong at night.

The third day

The wind and rain were sometimes strong. I woke up at 5:00. I ate JMT bread, cheese, rehydrate mango, with coffee. I tighten the light blue belt of the waist belt of the backpack (This was a mistake, this belt must be loosen). I started to hike at 6:50. At 7:40, Mount Eboshi. It rained terrible. There was snow and wet dead leaves. I must walk very carefully. At 8:30, I took a break, 1,160 meters above sea level, I ate an energy bar. At 10:00, I took a break in Mt. Byogatake, drunk cocoa. I was tired, because it was hard to walk. The north trail from Mt. Byogatake disappeared in the bush. Then, I climb down to the Kareisawa campground. I took a break at the campground at 10:25. The huts and the restrooms were completely closed. I cannot understand why Uozu city made such a campground. There is still the forest road, two and a half hours walking. It rained sometimes terrible. I arrived Oritateguchi Station at 13:10. The hiking end.

The brief review of field test

The Fifty-Two 80 backpack

It was a considerably good backpack as I had expected. It follows well to the body movements, and the most of the pack weight hang over the upper coccyx. I failed in adjustment this time, but if it was adjusted properly, you shoulders hardly feel weight. This pack might be more suitable for the Japanese mountains than the Osprey and the Gregory backpacks. A brief Japanese adjustment manual might be needed. More details, please see my site.

The remodeled RIBZ

The remodeled RIBZ was very easy to use. It was a great success. I made a rude tentative inner case with tent mat for SLR camera, but I must make more refined inner case. By the way, I used E-620+14-54mm zoom system in this time, but even a huge SLR camera can be entered. More details, please see my site.

RIBZ frontpack: The first impression and re-modeling

I was offered the RIBZ front pack from the import agency for field test, too. The pack is small for the huge single-lens reflex Olympus camera, but it is large enough for a small SLR camera. I felt stiffness when I carried this pack. Therefore, I remodeled the RIBZ, which is usually attached to a backpack. When it's betls are changed to the shoulder belts, it is usable independently at the side trip. Please see my site .

The Fifty-Two 80, the first impression

I wrote the first impression of mhm The Fifty-Two 80. It may be the first class backpack, although more field test remains. Please see my site.

Palisade Lakes to Bishop --- escape

We got up at 6:00. I ate usual breakfast, but my wife ate soup and bread. She said that she felt better and recovered in a few minutes. I thought that we would like to move a little further to the middle of two Palisade Lakes and to stay all day long. We started to hike at 8:30. The couple we met yesterday ate oatmeal as like it tasted badly. The trail become uphill afterwards. Then nausea of my wife turned worse rapidly. Her symptom must be the acute mountain sickness (AMS). I doubted that she was able to walk through, because there were three high passes further. There was only an escape from Keasarge Pass, but it would take 5 or 6 days from here with my wife's pace. I decided to do an escape route from Bishop Pass. We began to return slowly, and lowered the altitude. My wife's symptom lightened when we went down to the entrance of Palisade Lakes. The lowering 100 meters might had some effect. We were heading to the ideal campsite in Deer Meadow, where I found yesterday. I set up a tent at 13:00. Because there was the stone circle for an open-air fire, I burn all the garbage and lightened. My wife considerably recovered from AMS in the evening. She showed good appetite.

We wake up at 5:00, ate bread, dry mango, and coffee. We started to hike at 7:00. We walked down smoothly, and took a break for cocoa at the usual place at 9:15. We also took a break near the junction of Kings River at 9:55
We ate lunch at the last campsite at 12:07. We started to hike at 12:50, the junction of Bishop Pass at 13:10.
The trail became uphill, but it was well maintained. We passed the first campsite at 14:40. It was located at 2,885 meters altitude. We started to hike at 14:50, the trail became gentle. We arrived at 10,000 feet area at 15:46. Suddenly, it began to climb. We took a short break at foot bridge 16:20. I ate an energy bar. At 16:30, we began to climb. We reached Dusy Basin at 17:40. I set up our tent on the higher place, because there were many mosquitoes. I got water from the river quickly, and purified it in our tent. Our campsite was an ideal place, it had 360 degrees view and less mosquitoes. I used an mosquito coil, then they disappeared immediately. My wife hated couscous as ever and eats potato salads much more.

Jane, Carole, Betsy。

Day hiking の帰り。

We got up at 5:50. We took usual breakfast: Bread, dry mango, and coffee. Our tent was frozen. The temperature was -2 degrees in the room, the outside are -4 degrees. We gathered the frost with a towel and throw away. We started to hike at 7:50. When we walked forward for approximately 30 minutes, we found several tents were set up. We realized that we set up our tent at the entrance of Dusy Basin. Bishop Pass was far. Several snow patches remained at the steep trail. Suddenly, a woman fell back on her back wonderfully in front of me. She said strongly " You! laughed me." I responded " Not laughed ", but I was sure whether I had laughed. Accidentally, we began to talk, since her friends also came. The woman who showed us skillful falling was Betsy. Her friend was Jane and Carole. They were day hikers from South Lake. I heard about the motels of Bishop and a bakery shop, and a big supermarket. I thought that we were able to stay for a few days at least. If we felt uneasiness, then we would move to Lone Pine. It took more than 30 minutes from here to Bishop Pass. The pass was even place with full of rocks. We climbed down a little, found a good place to see of the lakes, and ate an energy bar, bread, and cocoa. We started to climb down. Judging from his walking gait, an elderly man climbed up. When we met, I asked about the hotels in Bishop. He told us that Creekside Hotel(Creekside Inn) was the best.

It considerably took many hours to South Lake. I got water with a water purifier at the first pond. The Chinese American came for rest. He was talkative and macho. I talked about the AMS of my wife. He said "Did you try DIAMOX ?" I responded "No", He said "Do you know Viagra works for AMS, too. However, there is a side effect" with an expression of the joy. Of course it would be a joke. He asked me " Are you married?" I answered "Yes". Then he said "You are happy". I answered "But, I started to hike with 85 pounds backpack. Are you happy with 85 pounds?" He said "In my case, 70 pounds." I said "Then you are happier than me." He was thinking and said "Happiness might be relative." He was quite cheerful and intelligent. I failed to take the photograph. We took a break for approximately 30 minutes, then we started to hike.

We walked down the trail. There was considerable distance to South Lake. At 13:20, Sadderock Lake. We reached South Lake at 15:30. There were a lot of hikers at the parking aria. I was asked "How do you doing? ". I responded "We need a ride." He asked "Do you have a magic?" I said no, then he took out a magic and offered me. Another guy said "I will write for you." So, I took out map, and he wrote "BISHOP" in the backside of the map by a magic. Now, the tool of the proper hitchhike style was completed. I must do good job by all means. I moved to the exit of parking aria, about 20-30 meters away. Two cars went down, but they did not picked up us because they are full. I wave my hand. A truck approached, and the driver said that you should do it about 10 miles ahead then there were many cars. The truck passed by. When my wife took a ceremonial photograph of my hitchhike style, I heard a voice to call for from far away. It was Ms.Christine, who gave us a ride. We met her at South Lake. She was returning from day hike. Her husband was geologist and taught her hiking. She drive carefully. She had an experience in Japan. I said to her anywhere in Bishop was OK. At first, we get off at Tree Motel at the suburbs of the town. It was vacant, but we want motels close to the center of the town, so we got into her car again. She introduced us ELM Motel in the center of the town. An Indian runs it. I thought it might be an American Indian, but it was really an Indian person. She went together for confirmation until our check-in. The rate was cheap with one night 78 dollars. But there was no refrigerator, no telephone, and no wireless LAN, too. I contacted Mr. Otaki walking at the town. He recommended several restaurants, but we went to super market VONS located at the north of the town, first of all. We boiled vegetables, and baked a thick beef steak at the motel.

ELM motel was quiet and comfortable, although there were not enough facilities. We wanted to stay longer, but a reservation was clogged up and we could not stay more than two days. There was Rodeway Inn within the close distance, so we make a reservation. The rate was 72 dollars, as for us, elderly person discount worked. We ate sandwich as a lunch at Jacks Cafe. It was not tasteful as expected. We bought rice, vegetables, and a roasted chicken at VONS for dinner. It became very excellent dinner.

It is a day of the moving to Rodeway Inn. We leave our baggages in the front, because the check-in should be done in the afternoon. We ate lunch in Dennys. It was a completely American lunch. I bought a book of PCT and a book of the flowers at the Wilderness Center. We also did shopping in VONS. The dinner menu was curry, rice, and vegetables. It was very delicious.

Rodeway Inn

At last I succeeded in connecting to WiFi in Rodeway Inn. But, it sometimes disconnected, an electric wave might be weak. The breakfast was enough. There were sweet rolls, bananas, serial, milk, coffee, and juice. I ate about a half-dozen breads. We made ham sandwiches for the lunch. The dinner menu was boiled and seasoned of vegetables using curry roux left at night, gyoza, steak, rice, and grape.

I fully ate breakfast and took a walk until the north end of the town. There was only small stores and an car campsites. We returned to the Inn and and made ham sandwiches for the lunch. We went to the mountain climbing outfitter. The Vasque boots were seemed very good for my wife. We purchased then and threw away the old boots. The old person with mustache was a retired teacher, and helping shop for approximately one hour. The woman had been an English teacher at Kumamoto in Japan. The dinner menu was omelette with rice and fried vegetables. We succeeded too. It was very delicious.

I fully ate breakfast, and we prepared the materials of the sandwich of lunch. We went to the bus stop in front of VONS. Five hikers waited. Two people are talking about Mt.Whitney, where he had a scary experience because snow was frozen and he wore shoes. An Australian man, and a woman also intended to go to Los Angeles. We went to Lancaster by CREST bus and transferred to METROLINK and went to Los Angels.

VVR to Palisade Lake

8/6(Sat)
I woke up at 6:00, and went to the restroom. I ate PCT special as a breakfast slowly. It was very heavy, so I was not able to eat the lunch. I talk with Mr. and Mrs. British, whom I had gotten to know in the ferry yesterday. As for the man, his height was average, but he was a muscular tough guy. He said that they walked about 500 miles from south. His wife wanted to stay at a hotel, so they wanted to go to Lake Tahoe via Fresno. He said that his wife carried only sleeping bag, mattress, and the change of clothes. At 10:30, the group of the Boy Scout came and they were very lively. The leader said that they started from Red Meadow, and it took 6 days to come here. He had blisters on a foot, and said very tired.

I thought that my wife would appear at noon, because it took about three hours form Fresno by car. But my wife did not come. I asked Jim whether it had happened something wrong but he did not know. I moved my tent to the more quiet place, where I had camped last summer. The British man was interested in my tent and want to see it. Then I showed him my tent; Robens Stratos. He said it was well made, but there was a condensation problem in U.K., he was not able to use it.

At last, my wife appeared at about 14:00. The driver of the car was named Tom. She said that Tom picked up two hikers and sent to Lake Florence. So, they were late, but the pickup fee reduced to 85 dollars. The last summer driver also named Tom, who was repairing the air conditioner of the cabin.

I ordered Combo as a dinner. There was much quantity, and my wife was not able to eat. Later, we ate the bread she bought at Fresno, cream cheese, vegetables, and soup in our tent.

8/7(Sun)
We got up at 6:00 and went to a restroom. As a breakfast, I ordered Country Fried Beef, my wife ordered Breakfast Burrito. And we made an additional order of pancakes. It cost about 30 dollars, the same price as PCT Special in two people. As a dinner, I ordered Pulled Poke. I thought it was named by pulled up a bone. It tasted very good. We were not able to eat Apple Pie.

I said good by to Jim, and asked him about Ms.Tsuchiya. Jim explained that the re-supply did not come, and he collected the food and made her the re-supply. But she gave up thru hike, due to the prolonged schedule. We received the resupply and check it. It seemed too much to carry. So I put several packs of couscous and beef jerky into the barrel.

The fat PCT hiker drunk too much and sung with aloud voice until mid night. I said to him to be quiet, but he ignored my caution. I felt unpleasant, but I thought this guy might be the exception. He became quiet approximately 30 minutes after my caution.

テントを撤収、パッキングして重さを量ると、85pounds( 38Kg)!

8/8(Mon)
We got up 6:00 and went to a restroom. I ordered JMT Special as a breakfast. I pack all my equipment in my my backpack, and weigh it. It resulted 85pounds( 38kg )! It is not a joke. We had no supply from VVR to Lone Pine, so, it is unavoidable. My wife carried two breads ( about 4 Kg), so her backpack was 34pounds(15Kg). The ferry had too many passengers and could not depart by overloading. Seven to eight volunteers got off the ferry. My backpack was heavy, but I was able to walk when I was able to carry. At 9:50, we began to walk. At 10:55, the junction of Mono Creek trail. From here, we climbed for a long time. I knew where the water was, so I climbed without water. It took time very much. At 13:30, we rested at the small creek. We ate bread and drunk cocoa. At 14:00, we started to hike. At 15:40, the slope became gentle and approximately level. At 16:20, we took a short rest. After the second brook, I found a small high place, so I decided to camp, because there were few mosquitoes, and it was a scenic and excellent place. The dinner was beef jerky and dehydrated vegetables and couscous.

8/9(Tue)

She was slow, so she could not catch up with us. The Mary Lake was very far. We saw the snowy mountains very near. At 16:00, we arrived Marie Lake. We met Ms. Jess, who had already setup a tent. We set up our tent remote place from her tent. I made 6 litter water, and washed clothes. I bake the pancake which I picked up from Barrel. It smelled slightly strange, but eatable. The apple syrup tasted terrible. Other menus of the dinner were potato salad, soup, dry beef and vegetables.

When couscous was hard, its taste became slightly better.

He said that a Japanese woman camped near here, wanted to meet Japanese people. She was southbound, so I thought we will meet soon. At 10:30, the famous river crossing of Evolution Creek. But the water level was unexpectedly low. We took lunch on a rocky place, because there were a lots of mosquitoes near the creek. At 13:30, we started to hike. At 15:30, McClare Ranger Station. We took a break and ate an energy bar and cocoa. We passed away Colby Meadow and we set up our tent on the rock, because there were a lots of mosquitoes in lower place. I put the wild onion in dry vegetables. Disappointedly, the fragrance of wild onion disappeared when it was fried.

10:10 Evolution Lake。

Three hikers were ahead of us. At 17:25, we reached Muir Pass Hut. Three hikers were in there. They smelled very badly. We went out immediately, because we feel sick with an intense body order. The Pass was covered with snow, but I decided to climb down. I found a ideal campsite near Helen Lake, There is a small pond when I go down the steep slope, and I found a flat place by the side. At 18:00, we set up our tent, and made an usual dinner. My wife did not eat very much. I carried too much couscous. We had very warm sleeping bag and down mattress. we did not feel coldness at all, and slept well.

15:00 La Conte Ranger Station着。Ms.Jess現れた。

We wake up at 6:00. Our breakfast were muesli, milk, dry mango, and the coffee. After breakfast, I arranged foods. At 8:10, we started to hike. We found that several people pitched a tent in remote places. We walked for about 30 minutes, we met Ms.Jess who was relaxing beside a tent. The surface of snow was soft, and the slope was gentle, the crampons were not needed. But, there was a steep slop, so my wife used the crampons. At 11:50, the first suitable place for camping. We took lunch, seeing meadows and pond. Ms.Jess went forward slowly. We had a pain in the muscle of the foot, but the pain disappeared after we ate JMT bread immediately. We were astonished the power of JMT bread. At 15:00, we arrived La Conte Ranger Station. Ms.Jess appeared. Ranger was absent. I purified 2 litters water. We walked further. I found an ideal campsite soon. There was a fire stone and the river run near. The shortcoming point was it was located near the trail, but I knew there was no good place for camping until Grouse Meadow. Thus, I set up a tent at 16:30. We spend slowly. I burn garbage, and washed clothes.

8/14(Sun)

We climbed from here. We took a break at the place where I took a break last summer at 10:50. I purified water, and started to hike at 11:00. The slope becomes gentle. At 12:15, we took a break in Deer Meadow. At 13:30, the climbing point of Palisade Lake. We took a short break in the fifth brook. I ate an energy bar and purified water. At 13:50, we started to climb. A climb was hard. At 16:00, we took a short break at 10,000 feet point. It took more time than I had expected. At 18:00, I set up our tent at an entrance of Palisade Lake. I purified 4 litters water. The usual dinner, and we slept. But, my wife waked in the midnight. She appealed a rapid pulse, lose bowels, and nausea. I thought there was a possibility of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) and if she was AMS there was no way to cure except climbing down. But we should wait until morning because it was midnight.

Tuolumne to VVR ---the training sections

7/30(Sat)
My tent was full of condensation, So I wiped it with a towel. I get up at 6:00. I ate a muffin, banana, cheese, and coffee. The muffin was too sweet for me. Mr. Otaki did not come. I decided to go to Wilderness Office. I come back to my tent at 10:00, and started day's hiking to Cathedral Lake. It was not fine weather, cloud was thick in the morning, and snow was left. I ate lunch at the vicinity of Upper Cathedral Lake. There are a lots of mosquitoes and I could ate calmly. I said to the trail runner "a lots of mosquitoes!". He responded "That the reason why I am running." I decided to return at 12:50, because thunder storm approached. I felt uneasiness. It became pouring. I came back to the store at 15:00. The SIM card of the cell-phone was running out of a rate and was not usable. I had change money into coins at the store and made a telephone call to Mrs. Otaki. The store is full of people. I purchased vegetables and sausage and graham bread. The price is expensive as compared to Yosemite Valley. I entered the tent at 16:20. The thunderstorm came. The dinner were sandwiches and soup of the sausage. The sausage was salty. A young hiker set up a tent near my tent. He was doing boxing, so the hiking was a part of its training. When it became gentle rain, he put a rubber tube through the bench and trained his upper body. A group of people lay and slept covered with a blue sheet, slightly remote place.

7/31(Sun)
I wake up at about 5:00. I took out food quietly from a bear box, because all were sleeping. I ate graham bread, dry mango, and coffee. I have slight headaches. It might be an syndrome of altitude sickness. My watch indicated 2,500 meters from the sea level. I started to hike at 7:20. There was a thick cloud in the morning, and it seemed to be an sign of thunderstorm. The water level of the river was high and drifted to swirl. At 9:30, I took a break at the place with the first rock appeared, where I took a break two years ago. At 10:20, I took a bread and cocoa as a lunch at the vicinity of the place, that I had took a break last year. And, I took one tablet of loxonin, because I have slight headache. At 10:45, I started to hike. At about 11:30, three hikers went to Island Lake. A gentle rain and thunder. Fortunately, the interval time between lightning and sound were relatively long, I ignored the thunder. There was a flooding brook. I jumped into the brook, but several hikers
hesitated. My boots got wet, so I wore neoprene socks, which worked very well. A climb started at 13:30. I took a break, and ate bread at 14:10. A thunderstorm ended. I was at a 2,865m spot. I crossed the footbridge at 15:10. The water level was very high. I began worrying whether the fording was possible. I arrived at the fording point at 16:00. The water level is high. Several hiker crossed the upper part of the river. The water level was to a waist. I decided to stay and observe the tomorrow's water level. Considerable snow was remaining on the mountain. My tent was very easy to set up. The beef jerky was salty, so I boiled the beef jerky, and threw away hot water. I ate usual dinner. I woke up at about 20:00, so I ate muesli and milk.

8/1(Mon)
I got up at about 4:30. My breakfast were bread, dry mango, and the coffee. I took one tablet of loxonin, because I have slight headache. The water level of the river went down by approximately 30 centimeters at 6:10.
I forded the river on the boulders. The water level was about my ankle. I wore the waterproof boots, so I did not get wet. There was an opinion that the waterproof shoes were not needed, but when you wore waterproof shoes you hardly get wet and feel cold. Most of the snow on the trail was melted. But Donohue Pass was covered by snow. I attached the crampons and climbed Donohue pass directly. Then, the snow disappeared. I took a short break and drunk cocoa at Rush Creek. At 10:00, junction to Marie Lakes. At 12:00 Island Pass. Most of the snow disappeared. The young hiker was taking a break, his backpack was Osprey. There was a big marmot. I took a lunch. I started to hike at 12:30. Soon I saw Emerald Lake, and Garnet Lake. Much snow was left, and hikers disappeared suddenly. Most people went to the the route of PCT. I set up my tent on the hill at the exit of Garnet Lake at 16:00. A very good place. No one was there. I fixed two guy of lines of tent by rocks. One hour passed, two hikers came and set up tents on the rock of the hill. The self-standing tents were versatile. They never went down, they seemed to be tired. I ate dinner at 18:20.

8/2(Tue)
I wake up at 5:00. I took usual breakfast; bread, dry mango, and the coffee. I took photographs of Garnet Lake in the morning. When I climbed a little from Garnet Lake, there were three hikers. One of them said "One fell yesterday, Be careful". I thought it might be the woman who had gone in the evening yesterday. I answered " I had crampons, no problem!" There was not much snow as had expected. I took a short break at the great view point beyond the pass at 8:10. These aria might be suitable for camping, because the small brook flowed near. At about 9:00, junction of Shadow Lake and Ediza Lake. I put my backpack in the shade of a tree; and began a side trip.
Shroomer said that Ediza Lake was a beautiful place and he had hiked with his father when he was young. At 10:10, I arrived at Ediza Lake. I noticed that I had dropped a memo pad. I asked to an elder hiker, he said had seen it about 1 hour ago. I returned hastily. I met a group of hikers at 10:45. I was asked whether I had dropped a notebook. I was handed my notebook. I had dropped it at the junction where I started a side trip. I took some leaves of wild onion. At 11:30, I returned to the junction. At 12:00, Shadow Lake. There was a lots of wild onion. At 12:30, I ate lunch. The bird sang like a cat. Several family campers were in Rosalie Lake at 13:50. I arrived at Gladys Lake at 14:20. When I advanced from this place, I hike into the kingdom of the mosquito. I had full of food, so I decided to stay here, and set up my tent. Two hiker appeared from the Red Meadow direction. I talked a little. They were Japanese, Mr. and Mrs. Oka. We talked for a while. Then, I wore a rain suit, and went to Gladys Lake and got 6 liters water. When I returned, I met the old woman with the frame pack, who I met at Tuolumne Store. I said this place was ideal for camping because of few mosquitoes, but she said she wanted to go farther. The preparations for meal are finished all at 16:30. Nobody came, I had nothing to do. So, I walked to the round peak of the rock nearby. I was surprised when I climbed it. A wonderful view. It shows 360 degrees. This place was only five minutes walk from the Pass. Nobody knows!

15:45分Upper Crater Meadow。

8/3(Wed)
I wake up at 5:30. I ate bread, dry mango, and the coffee. I stated to hike at 7:00. There was some snow in the shade, but was not serious. I took a short break when I walked for around one hour, because I met yesterday's old woman. She rested with her friend near their tents. We talked for a while. I hiked on. A woman appeared from the rear suddenly. She said her camera got wet and broken, and she wanted to buy camera at Mammoth. I thought she forded at Lyell Headwater. At 9:05, I took a break at the huge switchback. At 9:30, Johnston Lake, full of mosquitoes. I could not set a tent in such a place. At 11:30, Mule Cafe in Red Meadow. I had tried to find a shower on the way, but I cannot. It may be in the campground, but its entrance fee was 20 dollars. Today's sandwich was very delicious. Alex, Brian, and Tom were there. I was invited to their table, so I moved to their table and talk for a while. They left the restaurant earlier than me. I was easy-going, and drunk more coffee. Then, I left the restaurant and went to the restroom and wash my hair. Everybody did same thing. I found public telephones, so I called Mr. Otaki. At 12:40, I started to hike. At 15:00, I drunk cocoa at Red Cones. At 15:45, Upper Crater Meadow. The group of hiker were looking for a campground, so I taught the ideal place near Red Cones. I walked forward. At 16:30, I saw The Thumb. I walked off the trail and sets up a tent. No one was. Few mosquitoes. Because beef jerky was tasted bad and was salty, I decided to boil it before use it as material of the meal.

There are too many mosquitoes to camp. At 9:40, I arrived Squaw Lake. I took a break with an energy bar and cocoa. Three hikers caught up with me. Their destination was same with me. I asked the departure time of the ferry to the hiker. He responded with 16:30. At 10:10, I started to hike. I slightly walked faster. Three hikers took a break for a long time and did not catch up with me. They might be stay one more night before VVR. Silver Pass was covered by snow, so I attached the crampons at 11:26.
At 12:00, I took a long break, ate bread and cocoa near Silver Pass Lake, where I had camped last summer. At 13:20, I met a couple, who accompanied with dog. The male was full of mustaches. At 13:40, I reached Pocket Meadow. The ferry terminal was far. I made speedup. My backpack was heavy. It weighed at least 30 kilograms. At 16:10, I arrived ferry terminal. At about 17:00, I met Jim in VVR, set up my tent, and had a shower. Mr. Byron was not there. I missed him. I ate fried chicken, salad, and an apple pie. In this night, I heard terrible snoring at night. I used earplugs and slept well.
